I didn’t hear Amethyst, either.

Didn’t hear any sound at all that would give me a clue as to where they were.

But I listened again, then again.

Only stopped when Elias touched me on the shoulder.

“What did he say?”

“He didn’t deny that he was involved. But didn’t say he was either,” Elias said.

“You know Etienne. Slippery as always,” I said.

“But he said he would look into the matter and be in touch,” Elias responded.

“Doesn’t seem like his style,” I said.

“It doesn’t. But he might find out something useful.”

“Yes; so who else might be involved?”

“I’m considering. The Roys, maybe Isaac and the Sargsyans come to mind, though,” he said. “They have recently gone into business with Raphael.”

“Good potentials. But honestly, it could be anyone,” I said.

“It could,” Elias said, not looking away from my eyes. “But whoever it is, we will find them.”

I nodded, and he didn’t say the rest.

Didn’t have to.

Whoever was behind this would suffer.

Greatly.

I would see to it, if it was the last thing I did.

“And while—”

Elias was again cut off, the knock at the door interrupting him. I could tell he was pissed, but he answered anyway.

“What, Kayla?” he yelled at the woman who stood at the door.

To her credit, she didn’t flinch, but I noticed the look that crossed her face, one I didn’t bother to try and interpret.

“Someone is here and insisting on seeing you,” she said, her usually placid voice tense. She and Amethyst were friends, and I knew she was worried.

“You let someone in here?” Elias asked, his voice quieter and more scary for it.

“With everything that’s going on, I thought—”

“There’s no fucking way you were thinking,” he said.

Elias glared at her, shook his head in disgust, then walked past her without a sideways glance.

I gave her a sympathetic smile, to which she responded with a nod, and then I went with Elias, two steps behind him.

Stopped short when I saw the person standing in the elevator surrounded by guards.
