Amethyst smiled brightly. “Of course not!” Then she turned and settled Crystal for sleep.

I left them, not wanting to, but knowing that Elias and I had things to discuss.

“Kayla, she says you can visit,” Elias said when we walked into the living room.

Kayla smiled and immediately headed back to the nursery.

“You didn’t call first,” I said.

“This couldn’t wait,” Elias said.

I agreed.

But I didn’t want to leave them, wasn’t sure that I could. I went back to the nursery and found Amethyst and Kayla standing next to Crystal’s crib.

When I looked at Amethyst, she gave me a reassuring smile. “We’re fine. Go do what you need to.”

Her understanding made it that much harder for me to leave.

She walked over and caressed my cheek, then gave me a soft kiss on my lips. “The sooner you go, the sooner you can come back,” she whispered.

Her eyes were filled with emotion, but also with calm and determination I was eager to match.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can,” I said.

“Come on, Davit. We need to talk,” Elias called from the living room.

I lingered long enough to give Amethyst another kiss and then left.
