“What’s bothering you?”I asked Davit.

He’d come back after being gone for a couple of hours, and I woke to find him lying next to me, though he wasn’t touching me.

The expression on his face told me of his troubled mind.

“I have a decision to make,” he said.

“And what decision is that?” I asked, sitting up and turning to face him.

“We have an idea of who was behind this. At least we think we do,” I said.

“It was him. My father—” I trailed off, reminding myself that I needed to stop that.

Reminding myself that Raphael James was no father of mine.

“But he didn’t do it alone. Couldn’t have done it alone,” Davit said.

“So someone was helping him?” I asked, though I already knew as much.

“Yes,” he responded.

“Someone powerful,” I said.

“Yes,” he said.

“Are you in danger?” I asked.

To my surprise, he smiled. “Always. But this would be different.”

“You know I don’t have any experience with this. I don’t know what to say,” I said.

“I know,” he responded.

“But let me say this,” I said.

He nodded, looked at me expectantly, and I grabbed his hand.

“I trust you. You’ll do what’s best. I know it,” I said.

His expression didn’t change; he didn’t even look relieved, and I wondered if I had put too much weight on him.

It was something I had considered.

Davit hadn’t intended any of this, hadn’t anticipated a family, anticipated even more responsibilities.

And though I had no doubt that he loved us, would do anything for us, I couldn’t help but feel guilty.

Wondered if there’d ever be a time when I was something more than a burden.

“I don’t know if I like what you’re thinking,” he whispered, brushing his thumb along my brow, which was furrowed with tension.

“You don’t know what I’m thinking,” I responded, a soft smile on my lips.

“I don’t. But whatever it was, it made you frown. And I don’t like that,” he said.
