“A frown never hurt anyone,” I answered.

“Seeing you unhappy, even for a moment, hurts me,” he said.

I shook my head, and he smiled.

“See, there it is again. What is it?” he asked.

He finally separated the distance between us but still held my hand. No other part of him touched me.

It was so little, but it was also enough.

“I don’t want us to be a burden,” I finally admitted.

The words sounded weak, but I was glad I had said it.

I stared at him, waiting for his response.

“Amethyst, you and Crystal aren’t a burden. Not ever. You two are what makes my life worth living. I would give up anything for you. Do anything for you,” he said.

I looked at him, smiled, then lifted his hand to my lips and gave it a kiss.

“Now it’s you who look sad,” I said.

He stiffened, and the expression on his face was serious, so serious that I started to panic.

“What is it, Davit?”

He looked at me, blinked, squeezed my hand tighter.

Made me that much more afraid.

“I have to tell you something. I should have told you before, but I need to tell you now,” he said.

My heart was racing as I stared at him, his expression telling me to prepare for a shock. I took a deep breath and then met his eyes.

Promised myself I would be strong.

“You can tell me anything, Davit. As long as I have you, I can handle it,” I said.

“I know,” he whispered.

Then he met my eyes and squeezed my hand.

“Amethyst,” he said in a low voice, “it’s your mother. She’s alive.”
