“This… I…”

Davit reached over and hugged me, and I leaned into his strength, tried to take it all.

Knew that I needed it.

“You don’t have to meet her if you don’t want to,” he whispered.

Do I want to meet her?

I didn’t know.

“I don’t know,” I said, giving voice to my thoughts.

And suddenly I was overcome with emotion.

Fear, hope, sadness, and most of all anger. I knew it didn’t make sense, but rage was threatening to overwhelm me.

Rage for the girl who’d wanted nothing more than to have her mother.

Rage at her for leaving me.

And after that came guilt.

I knew what my father was capable of, couldn’t even begin to imagine what she’d gone through.

But I still felt abandoned, was angry about it and then guilty because I knew none of this was her fault.

Even though I hadn’t said more, Davit seemed to sense my turmoil.

“You don’t have to. I have you and Crystal. Nothing else matters. Not even this.”

I hugged him closer, worried that if I let him go, everything, the world as I knew it, would implode.

Knew that all I could count on was him.

“Come in,”I said at the soft knock on the door.

I could tell it was Kayla by the way she knocked, which made me smile.

“You’re smiling,” she said when she entered. “That’s good to see. Anything in particular amusing?”

“Not really. It’s just that I knew it was you by the way you knocked,” I said.

I expected her to brush me off, or maybe look embarrassed, but she just shrugged. “I guess it’s that way with friends,” she said. “I mean, I’ve decided we’re friends and I think we agreed on that the last time we talked,” she added quickly.

“We are friends,” I whispered.

I went silent, and the moment took on a weight, which, while not exactly awkward, was a little bit more intense.

Kayla stood from where she had sat in the chair in the corner and picked up the bag she had put down.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“I got some more things for you and Crystal,” she said.
