She laid the suitcase on the bed and unzipped it.

“I wasn’t sure exactly what you needed, but I tried my best to get anything that will help keep you comfortable,” she said.

She had gathered a range of outfits, toiletries, clothes for both Crystal and me, and I couldn’t think of a thing she had missed.

Just as before, she had anticipated anything we might need, and with each item she pulled out, I could feel how much she cared. Felt it even more deeply when I looked at the three pairs of glasses she’d included.

“I hope you like one of these,” she said.

“I like them all. Thank you, Kayla,” I said, tears gathering at the corners of my eyes.

“It’s the least I can do, and really it’s nothing.” She paused then met my eyes, her brow furrowed with concern, her expression sympathetic. “Do you need to talk?”

At her question, the floodgates opened.

I wasn’t sure what I expected, but Kayla pulling me in for a hug definitely wasn’t it.

Her doing that, that genuine show of affection, only made my tears intensify.

But she didn’t do anything but stand there, silently supporting me, until the tears started to slow.

“I didn’t know you liked jogging suits and glasses this much,” she said when she pulled back.

She gave a little chuckle, then shook her head. “Lame, I know, but I’ve never been good with this kind of stuff,” she said.

“What kind of stuff?” I asked as I wiped my face.

“You know, emotions and whatnot,” she said.

I smiled. “For what it’s worth, you were fine. It’s me who lost her shit,” I said.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say you lost your shit, but even if you did, it’s understandable,” I said.

“I know. It’s just…”

I started to tear up again, and Kayla looked at me, concern again on her face.

“This is a dumb question, but, Amy, are you okay?”

“Am I okay?” I repeated.

Kayla just looked at me and urged me to speak without saying anything.

“My baby is fine. Davit is fine. I’m fine,” I said. “So I should be okay, shouldn’t I?”

“Amy, you shouldn’t be anything but what you are. So tell me, what are you?” she said.

I was quiet for a moment, and she added, “In strict confidence.”

“I know. You don’t have to tell me that,” I said.

“Good to know, but now that it’s out there…”

I sighed, then looked at her.

“I feel so stupid,” I said.

“About…” She hesitated but then pushed on, “your dad?”
