Twenty-Four
Amethyst
“You don’t haveto do this,” Davit said.
“I know,” I responded.
I didn’t have to, but I wanted to.
And I didn’t want to.
Only a few days had passed since we had come back, since Davit had told me of the impossible.
I had gone back and forth on this for decision more times than I could count.
Finally, I’d decided.
I still didn’t know if this was possible, but all the years of my life I had longed for her, so if there was even a chance…
“She’s coming up,” Davit said.
“Okay,” I responded, though it wasn’t necessary to say anything at all.
I looked at Davit, smiled, though given his response, the expression was probably not what I had been hoping for.
“I look that bad?” I asked.
“You can never look bad,” he responded.
“That is the correct answer,” I said with a smile.
He returned the expression but then went serious.
It felt like I was counting the seconds, and when the door opened, I braced myself, wondering if I was ready for this.
Knowing there was no way I ever could be.
Not really.
When the woman walked through the door, I started to cry.
The reaction was instantaneous and instinctive.
And when I wiped the tears and looked at her, really looked at her, I knew that what she said was true.
I stood, my legs shaky, my breath even more so.
“It’s nice to meet you,” I said, crossing over to shake her hand.
She reached out but she didn’t shake my hand.
Instead, she pulled me close to her, surprisingly strong for a woman who was so small.
She hugged me tight then pulled away.
Then, she gave me a luminous smile. “Pleased to meet you too, Amethyst,” she whispered.
“I’ll leave you two alone,” Davit said.
