I scoffed. “No.”

She heard something in my voice, I could see it in her face. But she didn’t press. “What then?”

“It’s my…mother,” I said.

“Go on,” she responded.

“So you know?” I asked.

She nodded. “I met her at the door. And with everything that was happening, Davit decided to keep me in the loop, despite Elias’s objections. I’m sorry I didn’t say anything, but it wasn’t my place.”

“I know that,” I said. Then, I took a deep breath before I continued. “I… I feel like I should be talking to Davit about this, but I don’t want to seem insensitive.”

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“It’s just. He lost his mother too,” I said.

I stopped short when I realized that too no longer applied to me in the same way. I had lost my mother, lost years I would never get back. But Davit’s loss was different, and I wanted to respect that.

“Yes, but he loves you. More than anything. He wouldn’t be upset, no matter what you said,” she said.

“I know. I just feel kind of shitty. I mean, I have it,” I said.

“Have what?” she asked.

“I have the thing that I said I wanted more than anything. For years I wanted this, dreamed about it. And now that she’s here…”

“Oh. I see. You’re conflicted. Because you feel like you should be happy.”

“More or less,” I said.

“Amy, you should feel however you want. You have no obligation to Davit, to her, to anyone but yourself. So whatever you want to do, or not, is up to you.”

“But?” I asked, sensing there was more she wanted to say.

“But I would be remiss if I didn’t mention you have an opportunity here. I’m not saying you and her have to pretend like this admittedly insane shit didn’t happen. But you have a chance to talk to her. And we have only been friends for a little while, but I know you enough to think that you would regret it if you didn’t take that chance,” she said.

“Yeah. I might. So, I guess I should…”

“We are deleting that word from your vocabulary. You shouldn’t do anything but what you want to. But think on it, consider the opportunity, and then decide. Whatever you do will be right,” she said.

“You sound pretty confident about that.”

“Not that. I’m confident about you. You’ll do what’s right for yourself and for your family. And that’s all that matters.”
