“You’re…”

“Stuck in a mental institution? I was. But not anymore,” she said with a smile.

“Crystal, baby,” Raphael said, trying to turn on the charm.

Crystal lifted one brow then twisted her head so that she was close to his face. “What is it, baby?”

“You know all that was just a misunderstanding. That I would never…”

She pulled away abruptly. “You’re going to try to explain it to me?”

“Yeah,” Raphael said. “Just give me a little bit of time to explain. Make you understand that I didn’t mean…”

“Didn’t mean what, honey?” she said, the charm back in her voice.

I looked at Elias, who looked back at me and then gave me a shrug.

She seemed so calm.

Too calm.

If Raphael had brains, he’d try to get the fuck out of here. He couldn’t, but he should at least try.

But he didn’t have brains. If he did, none of this would have happened.

“Yeah. Just give me a little time, and I’ll help you understand. But you know that I never meant for any of this to happen,” he said.

“Oh, we’re going to have time. Lots of it,” she said.

Raphael froze then, something in his wife’s voice stilling him.

I looked down and noticed the wet spot forming on the front of his slacks.

Crystal noticed it too.

She gave a little half shrug, then reached into her pocket and pulled out a tiny scalpel and a syringe.

“Wh-what is that?” Raphael asked.

Crystal smiled. “Well, my friend here probably speaks for itself,” she said, lifting the scalpel. “And this…” She lifted the syringe. “Is just a little something to make sure you won’t miss a thing.”

Then she turned to Elias and I. “Gentlemen, if you wouldn’t mind, I’d like a little time to catch up with my husband,” she said.

“Be my guest,” I responded.

Then, I turned and walked away.

Didn’t even pause when Raphael screamed.
