Twenty-Eight

Davit

“Doyou think you can handle more excitement today?” Elias said as I walked into the apartment.

After we’d dealt with Raphael, we’d gone to the apartment building to clean up.

“Of course,” I said.

“Then get ready,” Elias said as he walked into the kitchen.

I looked at him, my question no doubt on my face.

“We’re taking a trip,” he said.

“A trip, Elias?” I said. I felt nothing at all about Raphael, but I wanted to get back to Amethyst.

“I won’t take no for an answer. This matter needs your personal attention.”

He seemed so serious, his mood shifting in an instant, and I understood.

“Let me talk to Amethyst. I’ll back in ten minutes,” I said.

I left one apartment and went to the other.

“Back so soon?” she asked.

She was smiling, and only when her eyes met my face did that smile drop.

“What is it?” she said, alarm clear in her expression.

I went to her quickly, wanting to soothe her.

“Nothing’s happened, but there are some other… business matters I need to take care of,” I said.

She tilted her head, studying me, and then asked the question that I had expected but wasn’t sure how I would answer.

“Does this business involve Crystal?” she asked.

I waited a moment, then nodded.

It was her turn to wait, and after a breath, she nodded as well.

“Take care of yourself,” she said.

I tilted my head, looked at her curiously.

“That’s it?”

“Yes, were you expecting something else?” she asked, a brow arched.

“Well…” I trailed off, thinking, and then finally nodded. “Yes.”

“If it involves Crystal, I’m certain it needs your immediate attention. So take care of it, take care of yourself, and then come back to us,” she said.

She was calm…accepting. That was the word I was looking for, the thing that surprised—humbled—me so much.

“Davit,” she said, a smile on her face, “if you want, I can argue with you.”
