“Wasting your Saturday for me?” I blink. “Please. We all live by very relaxed schedules. It could be a Wednesday for all we know—it’d make no difference.”
He nods once and looks over at me. “You’re angry he didn’t come?”
“I don’t care,” I tell him, shrugging absolutely zero noses in the air.
“So that’s a ‘yes.’”
I glare over at him and his eyes pinch playfully before they soften rather quickly.
“He was going to come, Parks.”
“And yet…”
“He has a girlfriend.”
I groan and flop my head into my magazine. “I know! My god, just write it on a pillow already, why don’t you?”
He rolls his eyes. “If I tell you a secret will you like me more?”
I have missed Jonah. Unnatural to not speak to him after all this time. It was a long year in New York without him actually. He tried hard to make it up to me, but there wasn’t much he could do to undo what he helped cover up.
It was easier to be angry at him over there than it is here. Here, with him in my face reminding me of the boy who held my hair back while I vomited up half a bottle of vodka at a party he threw when I was fourteen, it’s harder to remain stoic.
It’s that stupid Hemmes smirk they do… so cute, so forgivable. Their poor mother.
“Maybe.” I give him a dumb look.
He purses his mouth, hiding a bit of a smile. “I have it on good authority that the love of your life—”
“—Don’t have one of those,” I interrupt.
He rolls his eyes at me. I go pink. “—Is calling time on his little relationship.”
I freeze, looking over at him wide-eyed. “Right now?” I ask, my eyebrows up.
He gives me a look. “Right now? How the fuck would I know? Right now…”
He shakes his head at me.
“But soon?” I know my eyes look brighter and more hopeful than I want them to. I don’t care, it’s Jonah. He’s seen me at me worst and my even more worst, he can see me now at my blooming hopeful.
“Soon.” He nods.
I fall back on my bed and breathe out, relieved.
He lies back next to me. “Thought you’d like that.”
