I shrug.

“When?” Taura asks loudly.

“New York. I just was trying to annoy Rush.” I shrug again and they both roll their eyes, but Christian’s not paying attention, just sitting there stroking his chin. “Should I get a beard?”

“No. Why?” I glance at him. “Because the sexy policeman has a bit of one?”

“No,” Christian scowls at me. “What the fuck did you bring him up for?”

I pull a face, look over to Henry and Taura. “Someone’s touchy…”

“I am touchy, Parks. You know why?” he asks loudly, sounding preachy. I sigh already. I don’t have to respond. I suspect he’ll tell me either way.

“Because you and me are sitting on this fucking couch and the people we love are with people who aren’t us.”

I give Christian a disparaging look.

“I wouldn’t say I love him… out loud.”

They all laugh.

My head pulls back.

“What?” I frown.

“Did you think we didn’t know?” Christian glances between the other two, before zoning back in on me. “You told me in New York—”

“That was months ago!”

They all chortle more, shaking their heads.

Taura tilts her head at me. “Babe—”

Henry’s face scrunches up. “Do you want us to pretend we don’t know you love him?”

I snort, indignant. “I — no. Listen, I—”

“—Love him.” Christian nods. “You love him.”

“I—”

“—Love him.” Christian gives me a curt smile. “You’ve loved him since you were fourteen,” he tells me. “Magnolia, you never stopped.”

He gives me a look I shouldn’t argue with, especially considering the implications of that sentence.

“Parks.” Henry gives me a look. “We all know, we talk about it all the time.”

I stare at each of them, my feet feeling sweaty. I blink, a bit horrified. “BJ knows I love him?”

And he still picked that other girl?

“Oh!” Henry shakes his head. “No.”

Christian shakes his head. “I don’t think he knows, no.”

Taura rolls her eyes. “How could he not know?”

“Because it’s tangled. They’re tangled.” Henry gestures to me and I get the feeling these might be his brother’s regurgitated thoughts rather than his own. “Too much history. Is she in love with him or is she just attached to him?”
