“Fated.” She gives me a shy look. “That we’re written in them. Something stupid like that.”

I say nothing. I’m good at that lately.

“If you love a flower…” I say eventually, glancing at her. One of my tattoos, about her, like all of them are.

“—That lives on a star, it is sweet to look at the sky at night,” she says, staring up at them. Holy fuck she’s beautiful.

All these suns we’re staring at from other galaxies that I’ll never get to see except in the way they’re making her eyes light up right now. Hair a mess from the wind up here, her cheeks are pink from the cold.

“All the stars are a-bloom with flowers,” I say, watching her and she looks over at me.

I want to kiss her, and maybe I might, that mouth is begging for it. She’s frozen still, watching me watch her, so I lean in. It’s the kind of cold here where I can see our breath between us, thick and it clings to you with that Welsh cold — I’m moving in closer and closer and she swallows all nervous and then — headlights.

I pull away, annoyed.

She sits up quickly as Jonah and Taura come out.

We pile into the taxi. Just a twenty-minute ride to Tre-Ysgawen Hall so I text Jo as soon as we’re driving.

Jo

8:01pm

Put me in a room with her.

What are you doing?

Use Tausie’s birthday as an excuse

But what are you doing?

Nothing.

??

Do it

Please

The hotel is actually pretty sick. Like a country manner. Lots of stone and wood and gold trim.

The girls sit down in the foyer and Jo leans over the desk to the concierge and whispers, “I’ll give you £1000 cash if you tell the girls that there’s only two rooms available.”

The man squints at Jonah suspiciously.

“Nothing slimy, bro.” He nods his head in my direction. “Just trying to get the most annoying couple in the world back together.”

Jo flashes the guy a thumbs up as he snatches the wad of cash.

We walk over to the girls with the keys.

“Bad news.”

“Again?” Parks blinks.

“Only two rooms left.” Jo grimaces and Magnolia’s eyes flicker immediately to me — quick — just for a second. Then she looks up at Jonah and awaits further instruction.

“Okay.” Parks swallows.
