“When?” Taura frowns.

“Last night.” He nods.

I throw him a look.

“Yeah, no—” Jo nods, doubling-down on his shitty story. “When you were with Hen I went… off-roading.”

“Metaphorically?” Magnolia asks.

Jo shakes his head at her. “What would that even mean?”

Taura’s face scrunches up.

“What?” Jo shrugs. “You wanna check the PSI on the spare? Go right ahead.”

“What’s a PSI?” Parks whispers and I lick my bottom lip, trying not to smile too much. Her mouth that close to me? Can’t help it.

“Pounds per square inch,” I whisper back. She crosses her arms over her chest, not liking not knowing the answers to questions herself.

“Well, so, what do we do?” She frowns, looking from Taura to us.

“Sleep in there?” Jo nods his chin at the tomb, grinning.

Magnolia shuffles a little towards me. “Absolutely not.”

“—Would it be so bad?” I whisper to her and her body tenses up and all the ways I might un-tense her later roll through my mind.

“I’ll book us a hotel,” Jo says, pulling out his phone.

“I’ll call a taxi,” I tell him.

“You don’t think they’d have town cars out here?” Magnolia asks with a frown.

I glance at her, suppress a smirk. “Probably not this late a notice.”

She swears under her breath and kicks the grass.

I call a taxi. Will take ages to come.

Jonah and Tausie go back inside the chamber but I lay down on the hood of the car, staring up at the sky.

Glance over at Parks standing there in the grass, watching me, and I wait for her to join me. She does slowly, nervously. Climbs up next to me. Leans back, lies down. Stares up.

I wonder if we’ll ever not be like magnets… not be these two things that drift home to each other no matter what. If there is a way to break the spell, I don’t want to know a fucking thing about it.

“It’s cold.” She hugs herself.

I don’t say anything. Move a bit closer to her though.

“They make me think of you,” she tells me, looking up at them.

“The stars?”

She nods.

I glance at her. “Why?”

I know why.
