Yes or no

Yes.

Bridget looks at me confused. “What?”

Also, why did my heart skip a beat just before?

My phone dings again.

Ok.

I frown down at the little screen in my hand and type something back.

He couldn’t just ask me himself?

No response.

I toss my phone down on the couch.

“Julian and I are through.”

My sister snaps her head in my direction. “What?”

“Mmm.” I stare at the TV.

She grabs my arm, shaking it to get my attention. “What happened?”

“I don’t… Nothing.” I shrug. “It was weird.”

“Are you sad?”

“No,” I lie.

I am a bit, but that feels stupid and I don’t understand why I would be.

“So you just broke up?” she asks, just as confused as I am.

“We weren’t—”

“—Oh shut up.” She rolls her eyes. “You know what I mean.”

“We went to dinner, I think he thought something dangerous happened because the power cut, and then he sort of just… went weird.” I shrug. “I tried to ask him about it in the car but then he got weirder and said he was done with me and told Kekoa to drive me home.”

“Pancakes guy?” she asks, trying to keep up.

“Yeah.”

“Right.” She nods.

“And that was it. He just drove away.”

Bridget’s whole face scrunches. “That’s so rude.”

“I know.”

“I was just starting to like him.”

Maybe me too? I wonder.
