“I want you to see that I can not be with you and not have sex with other people.”

I open my mouth to say something but he cuts me off—

“—And I want to see you not need to date someone to feel safe.”

“But—”

He shakes his head at me. “You can trust me, Parks. And I need to see that you can.” He shrugs a little. “And you need to see that you can. You can’t just life-trust me. It’s got to be heart trust me too.”

“I do.” I frown because I really want it to be true and we both know I’m kind of lying.

“You don’t,” he tells me. “But you’re going to.” He pushes his hand through his hair again. “You’ll see.”

I stare over at him, frowning as I try not to think about his eyes and instead focus on what he’s saying to me, as stupid as it is.

“I don’t even know how to be your friend.”

He sniffs a laugh and considers this.

“Neither.”

I grimace. “Friends?”

He nods once. “Friends.”

“Will you spend time with me?” I ask.

“All my time.” He nods with a small smile.

“Take me shopping?”

“Yes.”

“Sleep in my bed?”

His eyes pinch. “Maybe.”

“Maybe?” I frown.

“Maybe.” He nods. “If you watch those hands…”

He gives me a playful smile and then tilts his head gently.

“It’s just for a minute, Parks. While we figure out how to do this thing properly.”

“As friends?” I blink.

He rolls his eyes.

“Stop saying ‘friends’ like it’s a dirty word.”

I lift my eyebrows up mischievously. “If I said dirty words to you would you stop trying to be my friend?”

He gives me a look. “Parks.”

I match his face. “Beej.”

He shakes his head a bit. “Parks, this is important to me.”
