“That’s amazing!” Paili smiles, glances between us. “I’m so happy for you both.”
Magnolia’s face falters. “What are you doing here?” Parks shakes her head. “I thought you moved to Spain?”
“It’s my dad’s birthday.”
Magnolia nods once.
“I was actually hoping I’d run into you—” Paili starts.
“—Which one of us, Pails?” Magnolia asks sharply.
Paili’s eyes fall a little, glances between us again.
“You,” she says with a look at Parks.
“Well, I have nothing to say to you.” Magnolia shakes her head.
Paili frowns. “You’re back together now, what does it—”
“—Matter?” Parks jumps in.
She lets out this sharp breath that sounds a bit like a quick cry.
Hold her tighter just in case.
Paili shakes her head, looking tired. “Magnolia, I lost everything when that came out—”
I blow some air out of my mouth.
“You?” Parks stares at her. “You gave it all away for one night with my boyfriend. I lost everything.” She holds my arm against her. “You took it from me.”
My jaw goes tight, hang my head. I hate myself more than I did before.
She sighs. “Magnolia, I—”
Parks silences her with a shake of her head.
“All those nights I stayed awake, poring through my mind, trying to guess who it was. Me laying on your lap and crying about what he did to me… And you did it to me too.” I can hear she’s crying in her voice now.
She shakes her head, wipes her face so briskly she practically smacks it. “And you made me think it was Taura—”
“That was Perry,” Paili clarifies, pointlessly.
“And you didn’t stop him, why?” Parks asks, angrily. “Did he force your hand?”
“No but—”
“—No. Stop talking,” Magnolia tells her. I’ve never really heard her talk to anyone like this before. “There’s nothing you can say.”
Paili looks sad. Could almost feel sorry for her if the situation was different.
“Magnolia, you were my best friend.”
“Yeah, well, you clearly weren’t mine.” Parks eyes her.
She shakes her head, not getting it. “You’ve forgiven him—” Gestures to me.
