“Where’s Taura?” Jordan asks brightly, dispersing her glance evenly between Henry and Jonah so as to not cause a disturbance.
“In Paris with Parks,” Jonah says first.
“For that last minute trip they took,” Henry adds.
I look over, curious. “It wasn’t planned?”
Henry sniffs a laugh, shakes his head. “Nah. Tausie called me on the way to the airport, said they decided to go. Parks wanted to get out of town.”
I swallow once. Ignore the punch in the gut, avoid a maritime metaphor.
“Ah.” I nod, offer him a casual smile as I throw down my drink. Order another.
“She’s left here early, then?” Jordan asks, sounding pleased.
“Don’t know. I guess so. Maybe.” Jonah shrugs. “Makes sense. Why would she come back here first to fly home?”
I don’t fucking know, to say goodbye to me?
I shove my hands through my hair, breathe out of my nose.
She just left?
“Well, good for her.” Jordan smiles, more chipper than she’s been in weeks. “Paris in the winter’s so nice, don’t you think? It’s so dreamy—” She glances at me. “Take me?”
“What?” I blink a few times, processing what she’s said to me because I’m not thinking about her at all.
“Sure. Yeah. We’ll go in the summer—”
Jordan sniffs, can’t tell whether it’s amused or hurt.
Jonah tosses me a look.
Don’t care.
I can’t believe she just left? Again.
Without an actual goodbye. Again. Even after that? That almost-kiss on my lap — her in my neck, crying for me. And before December 3rd.
I shake my head at the dinner table. Fuck her. I mean it. It’s good she’s gone. Now everything can be normal again.
Easy again.
Amazing how she can be home for a fortnight and manage to toss my entire life into fucking chaos and then just fuck off again.
I look over at Jordan, ruffle her hair and lean in, kissing her cheek.
“Paris in the winter, Jords. Noted.”
