Chapter 9- Alana

An operation? The gears in my mind turn as I try to rationalize why werewolves would be luring other werewolves away from their packs. More importantly, why would they involve humans in this?

I want to believe Wesley, and I want to join him on this, but I don’t know how much further we can go without letting the pack leaders in on this.

Kim wears a pensive look as she says, “If it’s an operation, we need to find out who’s in charge, and we need to take him down.”

It chills me down to my bones to think of coming face to face with a wolf that would sacrifice their own. What are they looking for? Who do they want? A big part of me wonders if I’m even strong enough to face someone like that. Kim and Wesley are stronger, their wolves are bigger, and they’re much braver than me.

After all, I hadn’t even kissed someone until yesterday. Bravery has never been my talent.

Wesley says, “I’ll talk to the pack leaders more about it.”

Kim says, “That’s a good idea. Do you think that you’re getting through to them? They seem to be taking you seriously, more than the rest of the men in the pack.”

My heart skips a beat as Wesley smirks and says, “I’m used to it. This is how it was in my old pack.” He gets to his feet and says, “Either way, we’re going to get to the bottom of this.”

I watch Wesley as he bounds off towards the pack leaders’ cabin. When he shuts the door behind him, Kim shoves a finger between my ribs. I yelp and swat at her hand.

She’s wearing a wolfish smile as she says, “So, what happened between you two?”

I can feel myself blushing, the uncomfortable swell of heat in my cheeks making me turn away from her. “Nothing.”

“Oh, stop it. I stayed back in Cosmos so that you guys could… get to know each other.”

My eyes widen and I swat at her again. “I don’t need you to make a love connection for me.”

Kim snorts and says, “Apparently, I do. So, how far have you guys gone?”

“Well…”

I glance over my shoulder and the story of what happened in the woods is on the tip of my tongue. But it doesn’t come out. I shrug and say, “I think we’re just friends for now. I don’t know what else to call us.”

Kim glances towards the pack leaders’ cabin and says, “Don’t tell me that you’re going to sabotage this. It seems like he likes you; he took an interest in you right away.”

“Yes, but what about the pack leaders? They’d never approve.”

I shake my head as Wesley follows Harrison and Niles out of the cabin, and they move into the woods.

With his rising status in our pack, I don’t even know if Wesley will be in my league anymore.

The sun burns into my skin as I’m tossed onto the ground. My back collides with the dirt, and Wesley hovers above me. His normally kind blue eyes have a hardened look to them as he tosses a bundle of firewood onto my lap.

“Now that I’m a pack leader, you need to learn your place.”

It feels like I’m being stared at, even if no one is around.

“My place?”

He cackles and says, “Get to work. Niles will kill me if I’m seen with you.”

I jump to my feet, the firewood clatters to the ground. “Wait, Wes! What’s going on?”

He smirks as he looks over his shoulder, “That’s Wesley to you.”

He turns and walks towards Jenna, who lunges after him like a fox in a henhouse. She sends me a look that sends pins and needles throughout my body.

I should have known better.
