Baine

Activating my ability, I dashed in front of Rosalie.

“Wait.” I held out my hands, stopping her.

The quick movement caused her to gasp. “Stop doing that.”

“We must return from the gardens,” I said, glancing at our surroundings. I’d taken her to the opposite side of the estate, far from the party. “Otherwise, there may be questions.”

A rose hue tainted her pale cheeks. “Why? Did we do something wrong?”

“I . . .” For once, I had no answer. Thinking back, we did nothing wrong, yet I knew my actions had been too forward. The wine had dulled my logic, and I acted like a fool. “No, but it’s not proper for you and me to be alone like this.”

Without thinking, I swept her into my arms.

Once I carried us swiftly back into the gardens, far enough from the party, I set her down.

She groaned and grabbed her head. “I really hate it when you do that.”

Placing a hand on her back to steady her, I noticed her body still ran hot. Was that her magic? “Close your eyes and the queasiness will disappear.”

Another groan.

Taking her hand, I led her to a bench and sat next to her.

“Thank you,” she said with a sigh. “It’s been an awfully long few days, and I miss my home. This is all so . . .”

“Unexpected?”

She smiled. “Yes, very. If I had known the troll planned on selling me to be a bride, I would’ve found another way to save my home.”

“Where is your family?” We knew little about her past, anything I could learn would be useful.

“My parents died a year ago. My twin left for war, and it’s just been me.” She gazed up at the stars. One of the white monarch moths flew overhead. Its wings had a smearing of okra and red hues. “I need to go home.”

A moment of silence stretched between us, and I allowed her to have it. While I had been around human females before, this one seemed different, nothing like the nobles Lord Demious entertained. No one had dared to ever speak to the magistrate the way she did. Yet, she showed courage when it came to her home. This human was more than what she seemed.

“Rosalie, we need to discuss what happened in the maze.”

Her cheeks reddened. “Which parts?”

“The part when your eyes turned to fire.”

Her brow furrowed, but she didn’t answer.

I tried asking a bit softer. “The magical energy in Farrow’s Gate is different from the rest of Saol. If there’s any danger—”

“I’m not a danger.” She turned to me, her expression falling somewhere between hopelessness and fear. “I swear I only want to return home. I have no ill will here.”

“I cannot help you, if you’re not honest with me.”

“Will you?”

I arched a brow at her.

She took my hand and clenched it tightly. “Will you help me?”
