“I give you my word, what is spoken between us tonight will not leave this maze.” Beyond my better judgment, I stroked the side of her cheek. “Your words are safe with me. Tell me. How did your magic break through the dampener?”

Her face flushed, and she glanced away from me. “If you don’t know, then you’re not the fae I thought you were.”

Uneasiness coursed through me at the way she peeked at me beneath those thick lashes, making me question why I was still out here with her. How could her magic bypass the dampener around her neck? And what did that mean?

“Baine,” she said, while watching the moths dance in the twilight. “Can I ask you something?”

“Yes,” I replied, much too quickly.

The moonlight cast directly into her blue eyes, highlighting the sprinkles of green I hadn’t noticed before. A unique and beautiful color.

“Do you think Lord Demious will help my hawks? I can’t abandon them, and they’ll die if I don’t do something soon.”

I thought for a moment. After his display, I knew he would not let her leave the estate, but he was not unreasonable when it came to magical affairs. “If you were to marry, you would have the power to help them yourself.”

She scrunched up the front of her dress within her hands. “And will he be a kind husband or choke me with his black death when I don’t submit to his wills?”

Realizing what she asked, I answered honestly. “Lord Demious may be eccentric, but he will treat his wife well. He did not lie when he said his wife would be his equal. The magistrate is many things, but he will stay true to his word.”

“That’s good to know.” Rosalie stood and smoothed out her dress, her bottom lip trembling. “I’m ready to return now.”

Her expression and tone had a frankness to it. She’d resigned herself to this bride competition and to the idea of being Lord Demious’ wife.

And that bothered me.
