I imagined what a life would look like beside Baine, me full of fire and him the wind to keep my flame alive. Two elements. One that sparked the other.

“Will you?” Baine lifted my chin with his finger, staring into my eyes.

“I’m an adult. I think I can manage an eccentric lord.” My heart beat loudly in my ears as Baine rested his forehead against mine.

“Do you think I could bear to see another male touch you?”

“You don’t own me.”

He growled in my ear, forcing me to admit my feelings, however crazy they were. His fingers danced along my skin, causing every part of me to wish we could stay under the moonlight in the woods forever.

A cold wind blew around us, ruffling Baine’s silver hair around his face. The stark contrast of his light lavender eyes and dark skin made him appear wild, dangerous, but something in the way he looked at me told me he’d never harm me. Though, I couldn’t quite understand why he cared about a wild thing like me, I liked it.

He drummed his fingers against my skin. “Keep your ability hidden and I will find a way to stop his plans and save the prospects. As long as he doesn’t choose you, you’ll be free. I swear it. I will not let you or any of the other females be sent to war.”

“You have to be careful. I don’t want you to get in trouble.”

The tips of his rough fingers sent sparks across my skin. Bringing his mouth close to my ear, he kissed my cheekbone. “Do not worry about me.”

“Easier said than done,” I grumbled.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve felt like this,” Baine said, taking me in his arms.

“Like what?”

“Alive.”

That word sent my heart into a wicked tailspin.

Alive.

That’s exactly how I felt right now.

We kissed once more, before breaking apart.

“Okay,” I said in a breathy tone. “Now, take me back before we’re both discovered.”

Baine lifted me, kissing my lips again before flying like the wind through the forest and back into my room before anyone knew we were gone.

Safely inside, I locked my door, and held a finger to my lips.

The moonlight shone in from the window, landing on him as he stood in the center of my room, arms crossed. His shaggy silver hair covered part of his face and I wanted to see all of him.

I took the collar and walked over, holding it against my neck. “You need to put it back on.”

With one hand, he swept my hair up and used the other to clasp the collar on and lock it. “You should sleep.”

“I don’t think I’ll be able to. Not after I know the truth.” I grabbed his arms for security. “I’m scared. I’m scared for the girls, for you, for myself. I feel helpless right now.”

Tomorrow, I’d have to face the other women knowing what fate awaited us all and not be able to tell them. I’d always considered myself strong, but this was a strength I didn’t know if I had.

“Come.” Baine led me to the bed where he tucked me in under the blankets.

Sitting on the edge of the bed in his tight leathers and hooded cloak, he reminded me of darkness and starlight. He leaned over and brushed the hair off my face. “You are an enigma to me.”

Holding the blankets tight, I hung on to his every word. “Why do you say that?”

Still brushing my hair with his finger, he continued, “Aside from Lord Demious and my men, humans have always looked upon me with fear and hatred, but you don’t.”
