Moving closer, I kept my hands on my weapons, ready for anything.

Lord Demious stared at the spot Alicia had been standing. The cat jumped and pawed before suddenly screeching and running into the cage.

Darkness filled the barrier.

Marco sprinted forward, I followed.

“Lord Demious!” I yelled as I rushed ahead, smashing into the barrier.

“I can’t get through,” Marco grunted from the other side.

A loud wailing came from inside the barrier. The air in front of me cracked like ice shattering. Readying my swords, I waited for the protection spell to break and release the danger inside.

In a blast of smoke, the barrier broke, sending black mist pouring out into the air around us. Screams from the humans mingled with my own men shouting. I focused on the area in front of me, listening for movement.

I saw the black tentacle before the beast.

Lord Demious had his magical coils wrapped around a darkthing. The massive beast blocked out the sun. I had seen darkthings, but never one so large. Its ethereal form resembled a bull on two legs. Horns curled forward with smoke misting around it.

Its white hollow gaze locked on me.

Lord Demious grunted as he held the monster at bay with his tentacles, but it wasn’t enough. I dashed forward, ignoring the scream I knew came from Rosalie, and sliced at the beast in front of me.

My blade went right through the mist.

“You can’t use normal attacks,” Lord Demious grunted. “Only magic or poison.”

My own abilities provided me with speed, not offensive magic spells, but my blades had an energy function.

Marco ran at the flank of the creature, chopping his axe into its side. The axe had a serrated edge dipped in poison. The darkthing howled and the sound pierced my ears, bringing me to my knees.

A blood curdling scream erupted from behind me. I glanced over my shoulder as a winged darkthing targeted the prospects. Somehow, darkthings had emerged from the plane Alicia had entered and now they were here.

Rosalie.

Our gazes met and she clawed at her collar, the fire in her eyes coming to life.

“Lord Demious!” I screamed and dove under the claws of the darkthing in front of me. “Release the prospects. We need the magic.”

He grunted and yanked on the tentacles shooting from his hands. “I can’t remove them with this in my grasp.”

“Release it and I’ll keep it busy.” Rising to my feet, I swirled my weapons in my hands and pressed the buttons on the hilts, covering the blades with lightning.

“Very well, ready.”

I faced the howling monstrosity, bouncing on my heels, eager to tear into the creature in front of me. It had been decades since I fought a creature as deadly as this. “Go.”

The moment Lord Demious removed the coils, I launched forward, blades slashing at the ethereal beast. Electricity collided with the darkness, sending waves of lightning crackling through the creature’s body. It howled and swung, nearly missing my face as I dodged the massive paw. With my speed, the darkthing could not move fast enough to catch me.

Hit after hit, I stabbed the tips of my swords around its body, creating a whirlwind of lightning arcing through the beast’s form. Streaks of blue danced inside the black mist resembling a wild storm, igniting the beast into a frenzy. Dashing behind and in front, I was a whirlwind of death, cycloning around the darkthing, disappearing faster than I appeared.

It roared and spewed a cloud of mist back and forth, catching me in the deadly mist.

Tingles went through my body, my vision blurred.

Sounds muffled in my ears, and I shook my head trying to dislodge the swarm of confusion entering my mind.

The darkthing swatted and connected to my body, suddenly corporeal, and sent me flying onto my back. Landing with a crack, I gazed up at the creature charging forward. Whatever magic it casted, the spell affected my muscles and mind, clouding everything.
