Raising my swords, I prepared to block the incoming blow.

Fire tore through the beast’s body.

Orange and red blazed around the darkthing as it screeched an earsplitting cry. Taking the moment to move, I rolled to the side out of danger. My breaths came slow, but the sudden cloudiness lifted.

Rosalie stood before the beast who turned its attention to her. Flames sprouted from her hands and her hair rose in waves, riding on the air, her beautiful face taut with focus.

The darkthing decreased in size and flailed at her.

In a blast of heat, the flames consumed her until she was nothing but fire, all-consuming fire that destroyed the beast into ash.

When the darkthing crumbled, the fire receded until Rosalie stood there, naked, and sweating. Our gazes met for a moment before her eyes rolled back.

I had her in my arms before she hit the ground.

Her skin burned mine and I grimaced at the searing pain. Without thinking, I whisked her away into the gardens to the pool.

With her in my arms, burning through my flesh, I stepped into the cool water, letting it wash over the both of us. Sweat covered her rosy skin. Every area burned to touch. I gazed at her bare in my arms, the fear that she might be hurt overpowering the burning on my skin.

“Rosalie,” I whispered and carefully dipped her body under, making sure not to cover her face. Steam rose from the surface as her hot body reacted to the water.

She shuddered in my grasp.

Coolness coated my burning skin. Though the flesh had been seared, my natural healing ability slowly knit it back together. Knowing I would be fine, I focused on the delicate human in my arms.

She had risked everything to protect us.

To protect me.

Holding her close, I listened to her heart and lungs which both sounded normal. Though the magic she exuded would drain her for a while, she wasn’t hurt.

“Is she okay?” Ara huffed, catching her breath.

“She will be.”

Ara brought a long blanket. “I saw what she did. Lord Demious ordered the girls and guards to handle the minor darkthing, but she ignored them. She walked forward and lit that beast you were fighting on fire.”

“She saved my life,” I said, replaying the courageous act over and over in my head. Not only did she save me and everyone else, she did it without thought, without realizing what would happen once Lord Demious saw her ability in action.

I lifted Rosalie out of the water and wrapped the blanket around her. “She needs to rest.”

“Let’s bring her inside.”

This time when I brought Rosalie to her room, I didn’t run. I held her in my arms, already thinking of a way I could free her from this place. After her display, Lord Demious would choose her as his bride, and it would take every favor I owed to change his mind.

He couldn’t marry her.

Not when in my heart, she already belonged to me.
