When I didn’t follow, she turned around with an annoyed expression. “That wasn’t a request.”

Lily reminded me of my father, always ordering me around. It made me miss my mother’s nagging. She at least let me experience life.

We walked to the third floor, but at the opposite end. Lily opened the door to a beautiful room decorated in lush purple and white silks.

“What are we doing here?” I asked.

Millie bounced back and forth on her bare feet. She had a splattering of freckles across her nose, which she wiggled at me.

“I can’t have you running off while under my watch,” Lily said, folding her arms. “Where were you planning to go?”

I sighed. “Anywhere. I paid well for passage, and Leon doesn’t have the right to keep me locked up like a token. I left my home, alone, to come here.”

“You and the captain seemed very comfortable with each other.”

“That happened on the journey.”

“You’re lucky,” Millie said. “He was one of my favorites.”

My heart dropped. “What?”

“Millie.” Lily’s tone lowered, and she glared at the fae girl.

“Sorry,” she said to me. “It was a long time ago. I didn’t mean any offense. We love the captain.”

“Listen to me, young lady.” Lily’s tone called my attention. “Fae live differently than humans and much longer. It has been decades since I’ve seen Leon with a female, and none that he has taken to his private room.”

“None?”

“No, which means you are more than a passenger to him. If anything happened under my care, he would be furious.”

“Isn’t there anything you can do?” I begged. “He’s been gone for a while, and I don’t want to sit in that room all night.”

“There is something.” She turned to a wardrobe in the corner of the room. “If you leave the house as one of us, you’ll be protected. Anyone who would seek to harm one of my girls meets death.”

“What if someone wants . . . you know?” My cheeks reddened.

“That is not permitted off these grounds.” Lily turned around with a deep purple silk dress, similar to the one she wore.

The thin sleeves pinched at the shoulders, and a black ribbon cinched the waist while the deep V-neck allowed anyone a tempting view.

It was revealing and seductive.

“Okay,” I said, and felt a pull at the bodice of my dress. “What are you doing?”

“Helping you change. We’ll have so much fun.” Millie yanked my dress down and I quickly covered my chest, even though I had underclothes on.

“You’ll need to lose those pantaloons,” Lily said.

Millie yanked those down next, and I screeched. “Stop that!”

“Don’t be such a prude. It isn’t anything we don’t see daily. Hey what’s that?” She poked my lower right side, just below my hip. “Is that a birthmark?”

“It’s nothing,” I said, panic quickly setting in. I grabbed the dress and slipped into it.

“It almost looks like a little lion. It’s cute!”

My gaze met Lily’s and her eyes widened. Most in Saol knew of the royal birthmark that seemed to pass down in my family’s line. A marker to identify royal light bearers.
