“Leave us for a moment,” she ordered Millie.

“Okay. I’m going to change.”

When Millie left, Lily walked around me and yanked the dress up to see my birthmark.

“Does he know?” she asked.

I pulled the dress back down. “No.”

“You are a royal light bearer. What are you doing here?” She hissed out the question. “You are royalty, and your place is not at the Oasis. We already have one rebellious light bearer living here. We don’t need another.”

“I know what my responsibilities are, but I needed one week for myself. All I am is a breeder. My father won’t send me to war or even allow me to use my power.”

“You’re putting Leon and his entire crew at risk. Your father will think they kidnapped you.” She shook her head, and the concern in her voice gave me pause.

“I would never hurt him. Please, just give me one night as this girl. I will tell him tomorrow.” I ran my hands down the silk dress, begging her to understand.

“If you care about him, you will tell him as soon as the sun rises, or I will.”

“Of course.”

Lily shook her head and began mumbling in the fae tongue. “You can wear this cover. My girls wear one, so it’s not uncommon.”

She placed a sheer purple veil over my head which had a piece of fabric tied to the side to cover my mouth. “I’ll have one of our guards go with you.”

“And I’ll be safe?”

“You will.”

Millie skipped back into the room. “You’re so pretty. You could be one of us easy.”

“Thank you.”

Millie grabbed my hand. “We’re going to have fun tonight.”

“Take Gareth with you,” Lily said.

“I will.” Millie pulled me alongside her, going on about the music and lights and the fairies that sprinkled fairy dust until everyone laughed.

I couldn’t help but laugh with her. She was contagious.

When we entered the main floor, Millie stopped at a broad-shouldered fae with long dark hair. “Hey, big guy, you’re our babysitter tonight.” She patted his chest. “And we want to party.”

Gareth nodded and waited for me to walk ahead of him.

“What are we going to do first?” I asked, swinging our joined hands.

“Drinks! And I know a fae in town who makes the best.”

Leon might be mad when he returned and I was gone, but I would certainly enjoy this. We followed a path through the jungle lined by torches to prepare for sunset. Millie shook her hips with her arms above her head as we walked down the sandy path.

My heart raced.

This is what I came for, to lose myself.

The sandy path opened into a wide-open space. They had cleared the area of trees in the center, and there was a massive bonfire with people dancing around. Fae beat drums to the side, wearing only loincloths. To the left and right were huts with humans serving refreshments, but the most amazing feature was the perfect view of the sky and the mountains with waterfalls pouring into a pink river that weaved through the jungle.

It was every bit as beautiful as I imagined.
