“I don’t think you realize what this swing is for,” he said with a smirk.

He yanked me forward and moved his hands to hold me closer, then pressed his mouth to mine. The sweetness of the wine added to the allure of his already seductive taste. Each kiss demanded more. Each whisper against my ears spoke of need. My body ached for him in a way I didn’t know was possible. The kiss went beyond any fantasy I might have had. He trailed a blaze of kisses down my neck, across my collarbone, making my heart pound.

Being with a man who wasn’t my husband went against every rule created. How would my future husband react if he learned I was not the proper bride I claimed to be?

Could I give myself to Leon and then leave him for another male?

No.

I didn’twantanyone else.

Leon yanked on the string tying the front of my dress, making me both excited and panicked. Placing my hands on his chest, I pulled back, creating distance between us. I needed a moment to breathe and think.

“Leon.”

“Mmm.” He kissed my neck, weakening my willpower.

“We need to talk.”

“Later,” he murmured as he trailed his mouth to my ear.

Closing my eyes, I ignored the desire coursing through me, knowing I could never lay with him with this lie between us. “You promised. It’s important.”

With a deep breath, he replied, “Okay.”

The hurt in his expression sent a shot of pain through my heart. He probably assumed the worst, and I had led him on by allowing him to touch me in a thousand ways.

Leon walked away from me and up the staircase. “Let’s talk up here, away from the bed.”

My heart raced with fear.

What would he say? Would he end it?

Walking up the stairs, I held in the tears and worry and tried to believe what Leon and I shared could overcome my birthright. That kiss proved there was something deeply connecting us. I didn’t know it. Ifeltit.

Leon stood with his back to me, gazing ahead.

“Wow.” From this height, you could see the whole island. “This is beautiful.”

Leon clenched his fists.

“Leon?”

He whirled around; his eyes so dark they seemed black. “I have to go. I’m sorry.”

“You’re leaving? Why? Is it me?”

“I have to go. Return to Lily’s and I’ll be there when I can. The horse knows the way. Sorry, love.” He kissed my cheek and ran down the stairs.

Confused and heartbroken, I looked out over the balcony to the port.

“Oh, no.”

Five royal ships, one of them a warship, sailed into the harbor, heading straight for theRavager.

I was too late. I should have told Leon sooner.

My father was here.
