Leon

Why was the human royal navy gunning for my ship? Did the Magi Council send them? Raina loathed me, and it was possible she alerted them to the vampyre. Still, the Oasis was neutral territory, and I had done nothing wrong.

I whistled loudly as I approached Lily’s. I’d need my entire crew for this one, and even that wouldn’t be enough.

Havoc was already walking outside.

“Did you see?” I asked, slowing the horse to a stop.

“Word was sent. The others are heading there now.”

I reached out a hand to pull him up onto the horse. “Any thoughts?”

“None,” Havoc said as he sat behind me.

“Yah!” I slapped the reins and raced toward the docks.

Through all my endeavors, I had never taken a job or been involved with anything that would risk my men. We’d done nothing wrong, including transporting a vampyre which there were no laws forbidding it. The twisted weren’t liked, and most of them feared, but it wasn’t a crime to befriend one.

My crew stood in a line outside theRavager. Soldiers lined the dock next to them, swords aimed and ready. The warship waited out in the harbor, and the other ships surrounding. I counted at least thirty guards, all dressed in white and blue, the royal lion crest engraved on their armor.

Havoc and I jumped off the horse.

“Stay calm,” I said. “We’ve done nothing wrong.”

Harris spoke with an older man wearing a blue robe and a large lion medallion around his neck. Gray hair covered his face and head, neatly trimmed, and his dark eyes simmered with rage.

The man glared at me. “Arrest the captain.”

Soldiers advanced, and I put an arm out to stop Havoc. “I’d like to know what my crimes are.”

“Kidnapping the royal princess.”

“I’ve done no such thing. Who is my accuser?”

The man glared and stepped forward. “I am. King Tarsios the second.”

The breath left my lungs.

“Your majesty,” I said, bowing my head in honor of the human king. “I would never do anything to hurt the crown. I am a loyal servant to all the kings of Saol.”

“Hmph.”

I glanced to the side to see Declan with his arms chained behind his back.

Keeping my gaze low, I asked, “Your majesty. I know of no princess. Is it possible you have the wrong ship?”

“We will learn once I have you and your crew thoroughly questioned.”

His soldiers grabbed my arms, and I allowed them.

Broxton roared, causing my men to advance forward.

“Hold!” I ordered, forcing them to stand down. “I will handle this.”

Meeting the king’s glare, I held my head high. “I will answer whatever you ask, but my crew stays out of this, including my second mate. Release him.”
