King Tarsios frowned and rubbed his gray beard, then nodded to his guards.

My shoulders sagged.

“Stop!”

No. What is she doing here?“Stay out of this, Havana.”

“Havana? You dare use your mother’s name?” the king said in an appalled tone.

Her mother’s?

Havana ran to me. Her bottom lip trembled. “I’m sorry. I wanted to tell you sooner. I just couldn’t.”

“I don’t understand.”

The king threw his hands in the air. “First you run away, then you lie your way to a place of hedonism. You are a princess. When will you learn your place?”

Everything moved in slow motion.

Havana lied to me?

She endangered my crew, my ship.

Anger replaced confusion.

Now the burned sail and the miraculous killing of the octopus made sense.

“Havana isn’t your name?” I spit the words out, doing my best to contain the rage building inside my chest.

“Leon, please. It’s my middle name and was my mother’s. I never meant to hurt you or your crew. Father, no one knew my identity. They’ve done nothing wrong. Release them and I’ll go home.”

King Tarsios waved his hand, and the soldiers let go of me. “Take the princess to the ship.”

“Wait!” Tears streamed down her face. “Give me a moment to say goodbye.”

“You have lost all rights,” the king shouted. “You are a spoiled girl. You will return home and marry Antoine and stop this nonsense.”

Even though I was angry with her, hearing her father berate her like a child infuriated me. He knew nothing of her courage.

“Havana saved us. She’s an amazing woman not a spoiled girl,” Declan screamed, not having the good sense to keep his mouth shut.

“You dare speak to the king that way?” One soldier slammed the butt of his sword into Declan’s stomach.

Declan dropped to his knees. “Havana is part of our crew, and we protect our own.”

Something about those words softened my anger. Still, she lied about her heritage. I knew she was keeping something a secret, but this?

Havana’s tears continued to pour, but she balled her hands into fists. “I am a woman. One who knows what she wants and who she wants.”

Her gaze flickered to me.

Don’t. You’ll get us both killed.

“You are royalty,” the king replied, his tone dropping. “We are done with this discussion.”

“Stop treating me like a child.” Light streamed from her eyes, blazing a hole in the wood in front of the king’s feet.

Soldiers descended on her, and I launched forward, only to be held back by Havoc.
