Leon

“How could you even think of going after her?” Havoc shoved me, and I glared at him.

“She was about to jump into—” the words left my mouth as Havana let go of the railing and dove into the sea. “Havana!”

I dashed toward the railing, but Havoc slid in front of me, blocking me and pushing me back. “Don’t.”

“She’s going to get herself killed!”

“Then let her die.”

I swung, slamming my fist into his face. “Never say that again.”

Havoc rubbed his jaw but didn’t back down. “You want to save this female who put you and the crew at risk? Do it after we save theRavager.”

My chest rumbled as rage took over.

“Now you’ve done it,” Harris said, stepping back. “Someone’s about to be shark bait.”

“Leon.” Havoc’s voice lowered and he held up his hands in defense. “I’m not saying you can’t go after her. We need you to push us out a little farther.”

We were almost far enough out that we could drop anchor and hang by the eastern side. With a frustrated roar, I held out my arms and raised them up, forcing the sea to push us around the jetty of rocks sticking out from the island. “Drop anchor!”

“Captain!” Declan shouted from the crow’s nest. “We got incoming!”

A massive shadow moved in the sky, blocking out part of the moon.

“What is that?” Harris’s cigar hung out of his mouth.

“I don’t know,” I said, moving to starboard side.

“That is why I am here.” Elon appeared out of nowhere.

“How did you get back on the ship?” I asked.

He floated forward. “When that monster attacked the docks, and you left, I decided to see what you were up to.”

“What do you mean that’s why you’re here?” When Elon had called on me, he only said he needed passage to meet someone.

Elon grew quiet as he looked at the oncoming swirl of shadows. “If that swarm is allowed to live, it will keep moving on from region to region.”

“How did you know it was coming this way?” I exchanged a glance with Havoc, understanding why the lich king had come after Elon. The undead were the only race that would thrive in the chaos left by the darkthings.

“I have my resources.”

“And what does the twisted care about darkthings?” Harris flicked his cigar into the sea and cocked his magical crossbow.

Elon turned to him with a smile full of fangs. “Vampyres need to feed, and we can’t do that if all of you are dead.”

“Well, that’s comforting,” Harris grumbled.

“What do you know about these creatures?” I asked, keeping my eye on the shadows slowly coming closer. It was hard to tell how far out they were. “How are we supposed to fight something that large?”

Elon sighed. “I know you think because I’m old I know everything, but I know nothing about this type of darkthing. Did you not say you encountered them at the drop?”

“We saw the aftermath. We’re going to need help, and I know just who to bother.”
