“Well, now we know this isn’t a breakup conversation.”
Leave it to Peter to make a joke out of one of the most serious conversations he’ll probably ever have. I don’t think he has any idea what’s coming.
Before I can tell Peter to quiet down, Darian pokes him in the side and brings his finger up to his lips in a “shhhh” gesture so that I can continue.
“Thanks, Darian. So anyhow, I love our little family. I really do. And the reason I’ve sat you both down is because there’s a good chance this family is about to get bigger, if you know what I mean.”
I expect their eyes to widen with understanding, but their eyebrows only furrow, and finally Peter raises his as if to say:what are you talking about?
“I don’t mean that I want another romantic partner. I think the three of us is plenty, as far as that goes. But I took this test this morning, and although I haven’t looked at the results, I have a pretty good idea of what it says.”
I reach into my pocket and pull out the pregnancy test, and both Peter and Darian’s eyes widen with the understanding that they were previously lacking.
“You mean you’re…”
“I think so, but I haven’t looked. Tell me what it says.”
With that, I turn the test in their direction and hold my breath. After a few seconds of deafening silence, both men look up at me and say it in unison:
“You’re pregnant.”
