Isaac

Luke and I sit in silence for what seems like forever. My mind is racing- it wasn’t easy rejecting Emma. She was so incredibly sexy, and that dance really got me going. But I had to keep a straight face.

Luke is gazing out the window. I imagine his mind is going to the same place.

“Do you think she was serious?”

His question brings me back to reality.

“I mean yeah, she seems pretty serious. Especially after that dance,” I sigh loudly.

“I don’t know about you man, but I’ve never been in a situation like that.”

“Me either.” I stare off into the night.

Don’t get me wrong- I’m obviously into women- but a situation where Emma would be the focus of both of our attention… is pretty intriguing.

“So what if we actually did it?”

“What?”

“Yeah!” Luke turns to me, animated, smiling wide and bright. “What if we just show up like she asked? Put her money where her mouth is.”

‘I’d like her to put her mouth somewhere else, I think,’ I think.

I laugh out loud, a combination of fear and excitement stirring in my gut.

I swallow loudly. Luke nudges me as I drive.

“Seems like somebody is excited,” he says, turning back to gazing out the window. “I’m down if you are. Only one life to live, right?”

Tonight seems too soon for me. I’ll all for being wild, but I have to make sure she is really serious. It wouldn’t be too fun to show up and catch her off guard.

“Let me call her tomorrow and make sure. If she’s still down, I guess we’re in it together man.”

Luke laughs excitedly as we pull into Jonathan’s driveway. I know that I’ll have trouble sleeping tonight. It may be Christmas tomorrow.

The next morning I’m off shift, so I take the chance to give Emma a ring. I make sure it's past noon, as I know she got off work pretty late. She picks up on the second ring.

“Well, hello stranger.”

Her tone is sarcastic, but I sense hurt beneath it. It must have felt crappy to be rejected last night, not by just one guy- but two.

“Hello to you too, lady.”

Silence of the other end of the phone. She is afraid of being rejected again. I take the bull by the horns.

“So I barely slept last night. That dance really got to me.”

Emma laughs. Her tone seems to lighten up a little.

“I was hoping it would stick in at least one of your minds. I can’t lie to you though; my bed felt a bit cold.”

“That’s what I was calling for. I wanted to see if you actually meant what you asked last night.”

Emma lets out an abrupt laugh. It makes me shake, pull the phone away from my ear.

“I thought you knew me by now Isaac? I never say anything I don’t mean.”
