Being in love with one man is hard enough- but falling for two men is impossible. Now there are twice as many ways to get hurt. They like me now- but where will these relationships be in two months, or a year?

I have way too much time to think about this since Mattheo is out of town, and I’m avoiding James.

The salesclerk raps on my dressing room door and hands me ten more outfits to try on. I’ve requested that she bring me red dresses and suits only. I hand trade her the ten dresses I’ve already tried on, none of which suited me.

Putting on a red silk dress with purple flowers, I realize that I’m not dressing for myself. Now when I look at myself in the mirror, I’m thinking about Mattheo and James and what they would say.

Damn them for sinking into my head like this. There’s another knock on my door, but this time there’s a young man with a bouquet of flowers and a message that reads: “Join me for dinner. I’m outside waiting for you.”

I give the darling boy a tip and half debate dragging this kid into my dressing room and showing him what a woman can do. I almost do it, but the salesclerk is watching from her post. Oh well.

This dress suits me, so I decide to buy it for my date with James tonight. I don’t particularly want to go to dinner with James, but as he seems to be stalking me- I don’t really have much of a choice.

“Ms. Laverton, would it be possible for you to pick out a pair of shoes to go with this dress? You know my size. I’ll wait here.”

“Yes, I know exactly the pair that will suit you.”

“Thank you.”

Ms. Laverton runs off to get my shoes, so I sit down to ponder for a moment. The issue here is that I don’t want to get hurt, and in order to avoid that- I must break it off with both men.

It will be hard to do, but unfortunately it’s necessary.

There’s a knock on my door, but it’s not Ms. Laverton, it is James. How dare he come to the dressing room. I don’t want to open my door. I don’t want him to see me.

“Open the door Alexa,” James says.

I look at the reflection of myself in the mirror. What I see is messy hair and no lipstick. My other features are fine.

“Wait a minute please,” I say.

I reach for my purse and take out a comb and my favorite red lipstick. I fix what I know is wrong and then perch myself on the dressing room bench.

“What are you doing here?” I ask.

“What do you think, my love? I want to see you.”

What’s up with this “my love.” This is a new development. I cross my legs and grin to myself. So, the man is falling for me. This is good news, but how do I actually feel about it?

“I want to give you something.”

“I’m not decent. Can you come back?”

“Are you sure? I think this is something you’ll want to see.”

At that moment Ms. Laverton comes to my dressing room and knocks on the door. I’m sure her heart is beating fast at the sight of James. She’s an older woman, but James appeals to all ages.

Women can’t help but be mesmerized by James. Will I have to deal with that for the rest of my life? Can I handle it?

“Please don’t open the door. Just hand me the shoes.”

Ms. Laverton does as she’s told. The shoes fit perfectly, and they are a purple and red that match the dress perfectly. Ms. Laverton never disappoints.

“Thank you, Ms. Laverton, I will take the shoes and the dress. Please charge them to my account.”

“I will do just that.”
