Kelly

Sitting in the waiting area of the doctor’s office and tapping a foot on the chair leg, I’m anxiously waiting to be seen. I’ve got too much work to do lately to be feeling a little under the weather. I mean, Missy is a big help, but it isn’t like I can send her out like I do the other two to ask questions.

In fact, I think she has the harder position.

Over the past few weeks, my level of fatigue has grown in such a manner that I’ve had to take a daily nap. At least for a half hour. I think it’s just being overworked and as a result, overly tired.

But the guys made me promise to reach out to the doctor and make an appointment. So, here I am. Wondering how much work isn’t getting done for the last hour. It takes one full hour to get to the doctor anyway, and then an hour back. Three hours of my life wasted to what amounts to a touch of allergies and a lot of moolah to the doc for seeing me.

“Kelly?” A nurse opens a door and peers around the edge. She smiles as I stand up and walk toward her. “How are you?”

“I’m fine, just a little lackluster of late,” I respond to her. As I enter the hall behind the door, she points to a scale and I’m upset to find I’ve gained about five pounds. Shaking my head, I step off and follow her to an exam room.

“What brings you in today?” She smiles and asks me.

“My husband’s requests have made me come in,” I smile back as she jots it down. “Just feeling more tired than usual, like having to take naps tired.”

“Okay,” she pulls out a gown and tells me to change into that, placing my clothes on a hook over the door. After she leaves, I change and have a seat on the uncomfortable table, waiting for the doctor to show his face.

The more I wait, the more anxious I get. My feet are wiggling spasmodically when I hear a knock on the door, jolting my heart. It opens and a middle-aged man comes in smiling. He shakes my hand and says, “It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Hawk-Novack,” he looks over the chart and sets it down. “What brings you in?”

I go through the whole spiel again with him and he listens to my heart and lungs, then asks me to lie back. “Any chance you could be pregnant?”

My face must’ve fallen as he chuckles. “No, the thought hasn’t really occurred to me.”

He presses my belly and then sits me up. “I need a urine sample and I’m going to have

Alyssa draw some blood for tests. For the fatigue, just try to have more water and rest if you need to.” He smiles and leaves as she comes in and draws the blood.

She hands me the cursory urine catch for my sample and I hand her a clean sample, getting dressed and heading out the door. “We’ll give you a call once the results are in. Take care,” she smiles and shuts the door behind.

Sighing as I leave the parking lot. I’m relieved that the appointment is over. But his question about me being pregnant doesn’t leave my mind. I guess I could be. I mean, it’s not like we protect ourselves, so it’s a possibility.

But I’m not saying anything to the guys until I know for certain. It could still be a damned cold or allergies.

Our first anniversary is coming up in the next few days and I’m excited about our plans for that evening. I know that Trent and Owen have something up their sleeves, but I don’t know what. The closer I get to the ranch, the sleepier I get. The heat of the afternoon and the drive to and from the doctor are working me over.

As I enter the ranch, I’m so tired and I see Missy sitting at her desk. “Can you cover the phones for this afternoon? I’m in need of at least a half hour to lay down.”

“It’s fine. I’ve got you,” She smiles, assuring me of her capabilities to run the office end. It’s been a year now and she’s grown so much. “And Kelly,” she put a hand on my arm, “Take as long as you need.”

“Thanks,” I pat her hand and go upstairs. After changing into more comfortable clothes, I pass out on the bed until I feel the bed move. Trent is next to me, moving my hair to the side. “Still tired, huh?”

I look at the clock and freak out when I see that it’s going on six. “Oh, my gosh! I didn’t mean to sleep so long.”

Owen comes in with some dinner for me on a tray and they turn the TV on to a show that we all are watching right now. I’m grateful for the food and the company as I fall back to sleep snuggled between the two of them.

The next morning, I get a call from Alyssa, the doctor’s assistant. “Kelly? I have your results here and it turns out that you’re two months pregnant. The doctor wants you to come in to have a complete exam.”

Completely astounded at the news, I make the appointment for later in the afternoon on the day of our anniversary. What better gift for the two most special people in the world?

The next few days fly by quickly and my excitement and anticipation are killing me, trying to keep it all hidden from Trent and Owen. We get ourselves ready and head out for the evening a little earlier than they planned for. “Where are we going?” Trent asks.

“It’s my surprise for you,” I kiss Trent on the cheek as he drives and then Owen. Trent follows the directions I give him to the doctor’s office and we go inside. While they sit in the waiting room, I get ready for the exam.

“The doctor also wants an ultrasound to see that all is okay,” Alyssa says.

“Can the guys come in for it?” I ask.
