“But—”

“No, you’re just being a stubborn ass. It’s my money and I’ll hire someone if I want to!” she said, whirling away.

Everyone stared after her, confused.

“What—?”

Eagle sighed and rubbed his forehead. “Sadie wants to use the inheritance from her adoptive father to pay for an outside construction crew to come in and rush putting up the next two cabins. We’ve only had time to put up one, and she’s worried about where everyone is going to sleep through the winter.”

Hilary nodded. It was a legitimate issue since they now had seven men, five women, and a toddler living in a bunkhouse and two relatively small cabins with another baby due in March. Plus the one only she and Harper knew about so far.

“And—”

Eagle scowled at Hilary, stopping her words. “I don’t want anything from that man. He made Sadie’s life hell for years.”

“Couldn’t this just be payback for that, though?” Hilary asked.

Eagle just blinked at her.

Lane wrapped his arm around Hilary’s waist. “Smart and beautiful. I’m a lucky man, and I would like a dance,” Lane said.

“Think about it, Eagle,” Hilary threw back over her shoulder.

After a brief pause everyone went back to the party, or at least they did until Lane dropped to one knee just a few minutes later right in the middle of the dance floor.

“Hilary, I would be so proud and honored if you would agree to marry me?”

She felt the huge smile stretch her face, and she opened her mouth to answer, but all that came out was a choked sound, so she nodded to let him know yes and tried again.

“Yes! Yes, I would love to marry you!”

Lane stood and slid a beautiful diamond ring on her finger. “Good, because I love you.”

She looked at the ring in awe and then back at him before standing on her toes to kiss him.

“I love you too!”

Sadie sniffled off to one side. “But where will we hold it when it’s cold out?” she lamented.

Hilary laughed, and Lane looked shocked. “It’s alright, Sadie. I think it can wait until next summer.”

Sadie just nodded as Eagle hugged her close.

“Um, about that,” Lane said with a cough and a glance around. “I don’t want to wait that long.”

“Well, it takes a while to plan a wedding, and it’s already October…”

“We’re doing a destination wedding,” he said, pulling a small envelope from the pocket of his jacket.

Hilary opened it and poured the contents into her hand. She stared at them for several long minutes before it made sense.

“You did this?” she said, staring up at him.

“Is it ok?”

“Ok? It’s amazing! We’re getting married on an Alaskan cruise?”

“We are,” he said, relief flooding his features.
