“For what?”

Good question. “I don’t know. For having a dad?”

One corner of Ford’s mouth twitched up. “It doesn’t sound like I missed much. I did go into the navy because of him. My mom always talked about him being a Navy Seal. I guess I wanted to do something he could be proud of.”

“He definitely would have been proud of that. He never made it that far.”

Ford frowned, but then shrugged. “It doesn’t matter now. I’m retired, and he’s gone.”

“Ok, well, I’m going to go…” He trailed off.

“Take care of yourself, Sunny. And I’ll make sure Laura’s safe while she’s still here.”

“Thanks,” Sunny said, even as part of him screamed that he wanted to be the one to keep Laura safe.

He left the bunkhouse alone with thoughts he’d never even considered before.

Rafe was crossingthe driveway to the cabin for lunch when one hundred and ten pounds of blond curly anger assaulted him with seventh grade insults.

“Why are you being such a butthead?” she demanded, cheeks pink with emotion.

“Go away,” he said his voice flat.

She stamped her foot, and that got his attention. Who actually did that?

“I’m not, but Laura is.”

“I know.”

“And what are you going to do about it?”

Sunny shrugged. “I’m heading out tomorrow until her two weeks are up.”

Harper rolled her eyes. “And you think that is going to solve the problem?”

He tried to walk by her, but she stepped in front of him. “What do you want from me? I’ve already said everything to Laura I need to.”

“Bull pucky,” she spit.

Sunny couldn’t help but laugh. “Excuse me?” he spluttered.

“You heard me.”

“What does that even mean?”

“It means I don’t buy it. You like her.”

Sunny looked away. “And if I did? She lied to me.”

Harper shook her head, curls bouncing. “No, she wasn’t even sure herself what she wanted to do. She wanted to talk to you and ask you about it, but you must have said something to make her afraid to even bring it up.”

“I—” He stopped, then shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. My answer is still the same. I’m not the father and husband kind of guy.”

“Oh sure, but you’re the kind that will…will fuck her and leave her,” she said, and he could tell by the deepening flush on her skin that she didn’t use that word often.

“Everything we did was consensual,” he insisted.
