It was a wild idea, and he had no clue why he’d said it. His mother was…well, she was his mother, whatever her faults and maybe, just maybe, they could have a real relationship now. Plus, if she were there too, Laura would have all the help she needed, and he could go back to school without worrying about her overworking herself or Harper.

“Oh, Rayford,” she said, and her eyes filled all over again. “You don’t have to. I’ll be fine—”

“I want you there, Mama.” He looked around at the old farmhouse in desperate need of cleaning and repair and made a decision. Sell this place. Live with me for now and then buy a place or build one, or whatever. I don’t care. Just don’t stay here alone.”

She studied him for a long minute, and he was certain she’d refuse, then she nodded slowly. “If you’re sure. I’d love that.”

“I am. Go pack. I’ll book us a flight.”

“What, tonight?”

Sunny glanced at his phone. “No, probably tomorrow morning, but we can go stay at a hotel near the airport so we’re close by in the morning. I have to get back and talk to Laura,” he said, desperation lacing his tone now that he knew he wanted this child. Wanted it…and its mother possibly more than he’d ever wanted anything in his life.
