Laura gaped at her. “How long have you been here?”

“Long enough to see your knight in shining armor take out some trash and spill his guts to you.”

“So you think he’s serious?”

“Of course, I do. He brought his mother,” she said as though that explained everything.

Laura turned away and walked toward her bedroom. It killed him to watch, but he knew he couldn’t pressure her into this either. Even though he now wanted this child more than his next breath didn’t mean she would or had to feel the same. She stopped just outside the door was quiet so long he began to fear he was too late for all of it, and he swore to himself he would support her no matter what she chose, when she turned and stared hard at him.

“You really want this baby?”

“Yes,” he breathed, relief coursing through him.

“And me?”

“Definitely,” he answered again.

A choked sob escaped her. “Damn it,” she sputtered. “I don’t want to cry again! Don’t you ever fucking do something this stupid again!”

Then she turned stumbled into his arms and cried. He held her until she slowed to a soft hiccupping sob, then he picked her up and carried her into her room, kicking the door shut behind them.

Lying her on the bed he climbed beside her and held her until she slept, feeling at home for the first time in as long as he could remember.
