“No shit?” Sean exclaimed.

“No shit,” I mumbled.

“And he’s really fucking good,” Drew said. He caught my eye and winked, and my stomach exploded in somersaults. “Seriously.”

Sean tied up his mane and shook his head in fake contempt. “You been holding out on me, Asher Lance?”

It was my turn to roll my eyes. “No—I-I just—” I stuttered.

“So, youhavebeen holding out on me.” He placed a hand on his heart and dropped his head back before dramatically sticking out his tongue and playing dead. “And here I thought I was your oldest, dearest friend,” he cried.

“Oh my God, Sean,” I huffed.

Brian took in the whole scene with a broad grin as he put on the strap of his gorgeous acoustic guitar. “So.” Brian looked between us. “What’s the game plan?”

The basement suddenly felt claustrophobic around me. The walls pressed in and the air became too hot. I locked eyes with Drew while a fresh dose of nerves coursed through me from head to foot. I was reliving that same terror as the night I sang for Drew the first time, but it was more severe.

“How about you guys sit on the couch, and we play you what we’ve been working on?” Drew suggested.

Sean and Brian nodded, then made their way over to the couch with their instruments strapped on and their beers in hand.

They looked back at me as Drew sat on his stool and brought out his drumsticks. I stood in my usual place near him but felt awkward without an instrument or microphone to hold. I took several large gulps of the beer, and Drew must have been able to sense the panic rolling off of me.

“Can you guys turn your backs? Just for the first song,” Drew clarified.

Sean was about to protest, but I gave him a silent, pleading look. He sighed and turned around to face the television, and Brian followed suit.

Drew motioned for me to breathe before hitting the drums for the first time. I took a deep breath and he smiled at me with twinkling eyes. As he drummed louder and louder, and we approached the first set of lyrics, my heartbeat thundered in my throat. I forced in the breaths and looked at Drew instead of my oldest and newest friends on the couch.

Without thinking, I belted out the first set of lyrics without missing a beat. I started soft and began my crescendo in the middle before screaming near the end. Sweat beaded at my hairline, and I felt the urge to pull off my shirt from how hot I felt, but I continued. At the very end, I sang fast and soft, almost like a rap, and then Drew finished us up.

By the end, I was panting. Drew bit his lip as he smiled up at me from where he sat. Though unspoken, I knew he was proud of me.

Sean and Brian turned around in their seats the second the music stopped. They both had grins on their faces, and Sean’s eyes were so round they looked ready to pop. He took off his guitar, hopped over the couch, and consumed me in what could only be described as a bear hug. “Are youfucking kidding me, Asher?”he belted as he jumped up and down. “Son of a bitch!”
