“No, I’ve never seen her before.”

“Are you sure?” Isaac’s eyes are burrowing into me, as though he’s trying to see my soul.

“Absolutely. Never seen her before in my life.”

“So, you’ve no idea why she would be hanging around the parking lot while your stepfather was here on the island?”

“No.” I look up at him. “You think she’s something to do with Chuck?”

“I thought that was one explanation, but then Hudson caught her on the monitors this evening, while we were behind the north east wall. Chuck, as far as I know, had left to go back to Miami. That’s why I disappeared and left Jax watching you. I went to see what she was doing.”

“And what was she doing?”

“She was hanging around the marina, according to Hud. By the time I got to the suite, she’d made her way back to the parking lot. She drives a brown Toyota. This really isn’t ringing any bells?”

I shake my head. “None at all. Maybe she’s nothing to do with me.”

“Maybe,” Isaac says, sounding skeptical. “But I don’t want to take any chances. I’ve doubled security on the gate overnight. Whoever she is, she doesn’t appear to be a paying guest, and nor has she been invited. We’re closely monitoring the route in and out for the concerts. It could be that she got in that way, so we’re going to be extra careful.

“Ok,” I say, feeling completely calm. “I trust you, Isaac. You make me feel safe.”

He looks like he’s about to say something else, then he stops himself and shuffles the photographs into an envelope.

“Did you find what you wanted from the bank statements?”

“I’m not sure,” I shrug. It’s the truth. I don’t know what I’m looking for either, but what I do know is there are payment streams set up to funnel money out of the Bird Holdings accounts to other accounts I’m unfamiliar with, but they could be anything, they could be completely innocent. “Could you do something else for me?” I ask, forcing myself to look him in the eye.

“Anything.” One look into the dark pools beneath his brow and I believe him.

“Thank you. I need passwords.”

“For what?”

“Everything connected to Chuck Bird and Bird Holdings.”

He straightens, picks up the envelope and looks at me with a seriousness that makes my chest swell.

“Consider it done.”
