The critter burrows his head through the gap between my thighs and bleats.
“I don’t have any treats.”
I turn my head just in time to see Tyler whistle.My new little friend launches off me and makes a beeline for Tyler, who is shaking a can of treats.Does he always have goat treats at the ready?
After unfolding myself, I wave, and Tyler tips his hat.
Snickers snap me back to reality.
“Don’t mind us, we’re just folded in half, waiting to hear what we should do next.”Joji grins.
“Sorry.I was a bit distracted.”
“Your distraction is kinda cute.Don’t ya think?”
He’s adorable and chivalrous and attentive.Definitely someone who piques my interest.
The following Wednesday,I go through the routine of shoving stuff into my bag while Tyler makes his way to my car.
The door opens, and I hold his rough hand as I climb out.
“You look nice.”His brown eyes are almost a perfect match to his hair.The ends peeking out below his hat curl a bit, which I find kind of adorable.
“Thanks.”
He gives my hand a squeeze before letting go.“I have a question for you.When I was doing some research, I saw some gardens where there were big boxes.Is that better than just planting in the ground?”
“There are advantages and disadvantages.In raised beds, it’s easier to keep the weeds out.But you also have to water those more.If you have a spot on the ground that doesn’t drain well, raised beds can help with drainage.”
He glances toward the large rectangle that he’s tilled.“Have a second to walk over there with me?”
“Sure.”
His hand finds the small of my back, and we stroll over to what will be a large garden.
“So back there, where there is a low spot, where water pools after a rain—that would be a good spot for raised beds.”
“Yes.Absolutely.And Joji wouldn’t have to bend over so far.”
Tyler bumps my shoulder with his.“After taking your classes, she’ll be a master of bending.You make it look easy.Even when you have a stubborn goat on you.”
“I think he was trying to hold me ransom for treats.”I start to nibble my lip, then force myself to stop.“And it worked.”
“Sorry about that.I wasn’t in on his plan.Just trying to get you out of a bad situation.”
He leans closer, and I suck in a breath.Is he going to kiss me?
His lips hover near my ear, and disappointment rattles through me.
“I like seeing you each week, and I don’t want one of these fool goats chasing you off.”
I shake my head.“They’re not.I like coming out here.”The lip is back between my teeth, but I can’t help it.“For lots of reasons.”
“I hope I’m one of them.”He looks past me.“More cars this week.Word is spreading about how much fun y’all are having.”
“I think Joji has invited the entire county.”
“Can’t say as I blame her.Have fun, and holler if you need rescuing.”
