Chapter 13

Jasmine

As soon as I pull out of the gate, I call Daisy using Bluetooth.

“Jasmine, everything okay?”

“Yes, but are you free right now?I wanted to chat about something. If you are with Grayson, it can wait until another time.”I know I’ll get a mini lecture for not telling her I’ve been seeing Tyler each week, but until now, I wasn’t ready to say yes to a date.

But after I basically threw myself at his feet today—technically, I threw myself at a goat—keeping a secret from Daisy seems silly. She might try to create more opportunities for me to spend time with Tyler, and I’m not at all opposed to that idea.

“I’ll be at your place in twenty minutes.Fifteen if I hit all the lights just right.”She laughs.“But that never happens. You don’t care that I’m in my jammies, do you?”

“Perfectly fine with me.See you soon.”When I get home, I rush inside and take a fast shower.Goats are cute, but they are farm animals, and after having them climb on me, I shower.I don’t want to walk around smelling like a goat.

With my hair still wet, I open the front door when Daisy knocks.“Oh.What’s under the foil?”

“Brownies.I’ve been baking more.Practicing.I’m trying to get better in the kitchen.Grayson doesn’t care, but I want to make good stuff. So please be honest when you taste these.”

“Promise.”I close the door behind her.“So...the reason I called.”

She narrows her eyes.“Have you been keeping secrets?”

My face is like a neon sign apparently.

“Yes.Remember how I said I added a new yoga class to my schedule?”

“I remember.”She serves up the brownies, then hands me a plate.

“The part I didn’t mention was that it’s at the goat farm by Stargazer Springs.”

Her eyes widen.“Have you met any of the guys?Want me to set you up?”

“Tyler is there each week, working on a garden for Joji. He’s super sweet.”

“Tyler is.He’s the nicest guy.I will talk to Grayson and set something up.I can’t believe you didn’t tell me.”She slaps a hand over her heart.“I’m hurt.”

I take a bite of the brownie.“This is the best one yet. It’s really good.”

She’s been bringing goodies around for the last few months. After a dinner disaster, she feels like she has something to prove.Grayson clearly doesn’t care about her cooking skills. He’s in love.

Daisy beams.“Yay.Thanks.Now back to the subject. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You know that guy at the party I told you about ages ago?Well, it just took me a while to give up the hope that he’d show up one day.I’d built him into this mythical guy in my head, and I’m done with that.Tyler is adorable and funny. And I think he might be interested.I mean, he makes it a point to talk to me every week.”

“I’m totally going to class. This will be so fun.”She finally tastes her brownie.“Oh!You’re right. These are good.Grayson is going to flip.I didn’t even set off the smoke alarm when I made them.”

I laugh.“Is that a first?”

“Possibly.”She taps on her phone, then glances up.“Do you mind if Grayson comes over?He wants to taste the brownies.”

“Of course he can come over.”

He wants to see Daisy.Brownies are just the excuse.

Life has changed so much. After I handed Ingrid the keys to the house we rented, I never heard from her again. We weren’t friends, only housemates. Now I have friends, and I like it.

My palms aresweaty as I drive to the goat farm. Both Grayson and Daisy are coming tonight, and they’ll see if Tyler is interested in going out after.Being nervous is silly, but I am.
