“Thank you for letting me join y’all for dinner. It’s fun seeing him in his natural habitat.”

She laughs.“It can be a lot, but there’s no better place on earth.”

I’m happy that this wonderful place is only seven minutes from the house that feels so much like home.

I slide into the booth, hoping Daisy arrives soon.I’m bursting to give her my news.

A young woman—someone who isn’t our normal waitress—walks up to the table.“Hi, what can I get you?”

“My friend is coming. We’ll both have coffee. But we’ll order food once she gets here.”

“Sure thing.I’ll be right back with the drinks.”She tries slipping the ordering pad into her apron but drops it on the floor.“Maybe I should just quit.”

“Just started?”

“Second day.The other lady won the lottery and quit on the spot.”She tucks stray hairs back into her bun.“I’ve spilled coffee on two customers, dropped an entire tray of drinks on the floor, and landed face-first in a plate of meatloaf. That was yesterday. You don’t want to hear what’s happened today. But I may not have a job by the end of my shift.”

“I hope things get easier.Rough spots can be hard...and long.”

“Amen to that.”She slides the pad into the pocket with ease.“I’ll be back with those Cokes.”

I don’t have the heart to correct her.

Daisy squeals as she darts across the room.“We had the best time.”

“Yay!But I seriously missed you.”I put a finger to my lips when the waitress walks up carrying two sodas.

Daisy’s brow pinches, but she stays quiet until the waitress walks away.“This is different.”

“She’s new, and even though I ordered coffee, she brought Cokes. It’s been a hard few days for her.Anyway, I have news.”

“If your news involves moving, I don’t want to hear it.You just started a new job.You can’t move.”

“It’s not about moving.”

She puts a hand over her mouth, but her smile peeks out on each side.“News about Tyler?”

I nod.“But it’s not what you think.”

“Oh.I thought maybe he told you he loved you or something romantic like that.”

“Well, he did.But I said it first.”

“Go, you!I’m so happy for you.I just knew y’all would be perfect together.Aren’t you glad you gave up on that fantasy and finally went out with Tyler?”

I plant my hands on the table and look her in the eye.“Tyleristhe guy from the party. When I didn’t recognize him, he opted not to say anything about it.Until Sunday.”

Daisy wipes her eyes.“That is right out of a storybook.”

“I’m sort of glad that it happened like it did.Let’s just say it was a good thing I knew him well before hearing about what I’d done the first night we met.”

“Bad?”

“I tried to kiss him after barfing.”

“Yikes.”

“Right? And in related news, I found the missing half of my favorite pair of earrings.Overall, it’s been a very good few weeks. And it felt like you were gone forever.”
