The waitress appears at the table with two plates.“And here you go.The bacon burger with extra cheese and our meatloaf special.”
Daisy gives a strained smile.“We, uh, haven’t ordered.”
“Oh.”The waitress turns around and scans the room.“This was for that table, but they already left.I’m so bad at this.”
“Jasmine, do you want the meatloaf or the burger?”Daisy points at the plates.
“Burger.Tyler and I are having dinner with the Grindles tonight, and meatloaf is on the menu.”
“Thank you.So much.”The waitress fans her face.“I owe y’all.Seriously.If you ever come back, you can ask for my section...if I still have a job after today.My name is Layla.”
“We’ll do that, Layla.”I feel for the young woman, but I don’t expect to see her here the next time we come.
The waitress walks away, and Daisy adds extra ketchup to her meatloaf.“Dinner with the Grindles?That’s almost like dinner with the parents.Things sound serious with you and Tyler.”
She doesn’t know much about my family situation because I prefer not to talk about it, and she doesn’t know anything about Tyler’s family.But somehow, she hit the nail on the head.Dinner with the Grindles does seem like a step, significant.
