Chapter 3

Trenton

Pickingupawomanin the men’s room? That was a first. The situation was bizarre, but something about her intrigued me. Maybe it was the lavender hair or how flustered she was. To her credit, she’d recovered quickly.

I escorted her from the dance floor to a dim corner of the club that had several arrangements of sofas. Luck was on my side because one was unoccupied. It seemed the crowd had already started to thin. It was early by LA standards, but it wasn’t a typical LA crowd.

I held onto her arm until she was safely seated. She didn’t seem drunk, so perhaps she was perpetually clumsy. Either way, I wasn’t taking any chances.

It was crazy. I wasn’t the guy who picked up women at clubs. That was more of an Evan or a pre-Hailey Liam activity. Then again, I’d never run into one in the men’s room before.

“What’s your poison?” I held my hand up to flag down a server.

“Mai tai?” She said it as a question.

“Are you asking me or telling me?”

Her cheeks flushed. “Mai tai.” Her tone was more confident that time.

After I’d given our order to the server, I leaned back against the sofa. “So, Seraphina, what brings you to LA?”

She threw her hair over a shoulder. “What makes you think I’m not from here?”

I laughed. She was a trip. “You’re not.”

She cringed. “Is it that obvious?”

I shrugged. “It’s not a bad thing. People around here have a certain… I don’t know… hardness about them. You’re not like that.” My thoughts drifted to Lindsey. She was definitely hardened—her dropping me and pursuing a relationship with her costar for the sake of her career proved that.

“You don’t even know me.”

Yeah, but I want to.In her sleek black dress, she oozed class, while most women in LA went for flash. I gestured to the space between us. “Then tell me about yourself. What brings you to LA?”

She opened her mouth then closed it. Looking around as if to see if anyone was eavesdropping, she leaned forward. “I can’t say. I wish I could. I’m dying to tell someone, but I can’t.”

“That sounds… ominous.”

She laughed. “It’s not. It’s a good thing, and I’m hoping it will evolve into a great thing.”

The number one reason pretty girls came to LA was to make it as an actress. I didn’t sense the same desperation that wafted off those girls, though. Seraphina seemed more self-assured and confident, at least where this was concerned. “I wish you luck for whatever it is.”

“Thanks. I’m hoping talent will be enough, but it never hurts to have some luck thrown in.”

Even though I didn’t know exactly what she was pursuing, I found her confidence attractive. “So what’s your talent?”

She hesitated. “I don’t want to say because then you’ll probably guess why I’m out here. If you haven’t figured it out already, my poker face is shit. If you guess correctly, I’m not sure if that will violate the NDA.”

“Let’s play it safe, then.” The server returned with our drinks, and I raised mine in a toast. “To the perfect combination of talent and luck.”

She clinked her glass with mine then took a huge swallow. “I saw you perform with Misdirection in Cleveland this summer.”

“Oh yeah?” I tried to remember if we’d done a meet and greet there, but all the tour stops melted together in my memory. Was I drawn to her because I’d met her before? No,I decided instantly. I might not have remembered Cleveland, but I would have remembered her.

“I took my little sister. She’s thirteen. We had great seats. When Jack came into the audience, he was so close we could have touched him.” She paused. “If there weren’t hulking bodyguards in the way, of course.”

I chuckled. “Yeah, they ruin the illusion a bit.”

“Are they necessary? I mean, has anyone tried to… I don’t know… get you?”
