My gaze lands on his tank of a body limp on the floor. Blood trickles from his shoulder area. He’s been hit, but his eyes are open. Thank fuck he survived!

The smaller cop steals my attention again by pinching his fingers into my forearms. My jaw clenches up in response and I growl, “Do you know who I am? You know what you’re doing? Think smartly.”

“Standard procedure, sir. Until we figure out who’s responsible, everyone is apprehended—”

“Captain Rodrigo!” I shout in mock excitement. “Your officer is over here’s getting a little rough. I told him it’s not such a good idea. What do you think?”

Captain Rodrigo’s bushy mustache bristles. He lowers his airhorn and stands blinking at us. For a second, he loses his voice, but he knows one thing for sure—I own his ass. He crosses me, I end him. Just like the mayor and all the other corrupt elite in this dirty town.

With a rough clearing of his throat, he motions for the small cop to release me. “What are you doing, Jenkins? Mr. Sorrentino owns the place! He wouldn’t shoot up his own casino.”

The small mouse cop reluctantly lets me go and I step forward, straightening out my suit like the cocky son of a bitch I am. Medics are on the scene and I bark an order at one of them to get Louis medical attention.

My brain’s still frazzled. I don’t know which direction to walk in. My precious casino is eaten up by thick smoke on night one. There are bullet holes everywhere. Guests cower in the corner. A few have pissed themselves. Louis is injured, and I don’t know where the fuck Falynn or the rest of my guys are.

One thing’s for sure, Lovato’s not getting away with a stunt like this. I’ll crush him ’til nothing remains but dust.

I’m speaking with Captain Rodrigo when Robby finds me. Robby and I might have our differences, but one thing about him is that he’s as level-headed as I am. It’s part of what makes him such a reliable right hand. In that moment as he rushes over, he looks a sloppy, panicked mess.

His normally beady eyes are large as he chokes out, “Boss!”

I look over and my stomach drops. He’s alone. Which means he’s not with Falynn. Which means…where the fuck is she? I’m halfway into roaring out the question, but he speaks first.

“Boss, I don’t know what happened to her. She’d finished freshening up and then we came down here. I was talking to Fozzi. Next thing I know, she’s gone. Next next thing I know, all this gunfire starts up!”

The venom in my gaze causes Robby to stumble a couple steps back. Even Rodrigo looks alarmed.

“You mean to tell me,” I say slowly, tone low and dangerous, “you lost sight of Falynn? You don’t know where she is?”

Beads of sweat break out on Robby’s forehead. He gives a reluctant nod. “She has to be around here somewhere. She couldn’t’ve gotten—”

“YOU STUPID MOTHERFUCKER!” I rage out of nowhere. I shove him out of the way as I storm across the casino floor, glaring left and right for any sign of her. “She could be shot up and you’re over here sweating like a little fucking bitch! I never thought my right hand could be this much of a failure!”

“Boss…Boss, I’m sorry!”

“Don’t be sorry, be competent, dumb fuck! Find her now!”

Now I’m panicking as I look everywhere but there’s not a trace of her. Anything could’ve happened. She could’ve run off, breaking our deal. She could’ve been shot by the stray bullets in the air. She could’ve been fucking abducted by Lovato’s guys—it’d be an Achilles’ heel situation to get payback on me. How would Lovato know that? How would he know to go after Falynn?

Only my most inner circle knows the extent of what’s going on between us. Has somebody switched sides on me? Do I have a rat in my midst?

Falynn is found on the top floor of the casino. The private level where I’d taken her earlier when we screwed in my office. One look at her, I know something’s up. She’s up against the wall in the empty corridor like she doesn’t know where she is. If I didn’t know any better, I’d guess she’s in some state of shock.

“Falynn!” I yell, jogging over.

Only then does she stir, snapping out of her trancelike state. But her eyes are wide and filled with shock. I grab her by the shoulders and give her a slight shake.

“Hey, you all right? Nobody hurt you, did they? Where’ve you been? How many times do I have to tell you to stick with my guys!”

Goddamn it.

I care about her too much. Even as I scold her, I’m aware I’m still in panic mode. My nerves are shot and I need a drink to calm them. It’s been a hell of a night.

“Falynn?” I say when she stays silent.

“Gio…” She trails off. She swallows and shakes her head. “What happened down there?”

“Lovato’s what happened. We’ll talk about it in my penthouse. You sure you’re okay?”
