“Yeah…I’m…I’m fine.”

My gaze narrows. “You’ve been up here this whole time?”

“I was using the restroom.”

She’s lying.

I know a liar when I see one. All the tells are there. Her breathing is shallow. Her body is tense. She won’t meet my eyes and she keeps nibbling on her lip. And hersilence—Falynn’s silence always means something. Whether she’s mad at me, content and relaxed, or plain hiding something, it always carries meaning.

But why would she lie to me? What could she have to lie about? How’d she gone off by herself in the first place?

I’m careful in how I eye her. My grip on her shoulder tightens. Bitterness trickles into me, cold and slithery. We might have our issues and our arrangement might’ve started off rocky, but I’ve come to trust her over the last two weeks. For her to stand here and lie to my face is unacceptable.

It’s a betrayal I will never tolerate. If she’s chosen to betray me, she’s leaving me no other choice. She’ll have to be dealt with.
