PLAYLIST: ? WAR OF HEARTS - RUELLE ?

I’m lostthe next time I open my eyes. I’m slumped in a seat in a narrow room with portholes for windows. When I try to move, a seat belt holds me in place. My body feels like it’s floating through air, but then it sinks in. I’m not moving, the ground is. The entire room. Blurry vision fading, I glance around again, and then gasp.

I’m on a private jet! Who knows where. And with who…

“Ahh, princess is up,” comes Antonio Lovato’s fast-talking New Yorker accent. He strolls over holding a glass of what smells sour and lemony like a gin and tonic. “How are you doing, doll? Hope you don’t mind we gave you a little…sedative.”

As I look up into Lovato’s gleaming, lecherous eyes, a shudder runs through my body. I’ve never felt more like a helpless lamb. He’s eyeing me like I’m some slab of meat he’s about to devour. It’s then that I remember I’m half naked—or was. I jump in my seat, bucking against the seat belt, and my arms fly up to cover myself.

Apparently, as I slept on the flight, someone had covered me with a thermal blanket. I hike that up my chest, my skin warm with embarrassment.

Lovato’s lips twitch into a slightly wider grin. “You can cover up as much as you want, but it’s not like it’s anything we haven’t seen. You put on quite a show up on that stage. Very, very hot.”

My face falls into my hands. I can’t even begin to make sense of what the hell is going on. The last moments at Club Diamond play in my head. I had gone on stage and saw Gio—at least who Ithoughtwas Gio—and then danced my ass off. He had sent two dozen roses to my dressing room and invited me to the red VIP room.

But no one had been there…until Lovato showed up.

And Enzo.Enzo!

Heart banging hard in my chest, I jerk up and scan the plane. “Enzo! He’s here!”

Lovato cackles. “Is that gonna change anything? You think he’s your knight in shining armor?”

“What do you want with me?”

The question falls from my lips in a whisper. I don’t understand why I’m on Lovato’s private jet, or why he was at Club Diamond watching me perform. I met the man once a few weeks ago at the dinner party Gio brought me to. Is this some kind of payback against Gio?

“I got off the phone with your other knight in shining armor,” Lovato says, watching me closely for a reaction. “I told him you said hello.”

“This is about Gio? You’re going to kill me to get back at him?”

“I told him the conditions. If he takes me up on my offer, maybe you’ll live.”

The breath stalls in my lungs, and I gasp on my next inhale. My eyes are large as I look up into his cruel, amused face. “Please, I don’t want anything to do with this—”

“Too late. You should’ve thought about that before you crawled into bed with my rival.” Lovato sneers, raising his gin and tonic for another taste. He rolls his eyes up and down my body again. “But I might have a taste of you myself first. The way you shook that ass tonight.” He does a chef’s kiss gesture with his free hand, his glee at my fear palpable.

I don’t bother dissuading him. He’s a piece of shit with his mind made up. There’s no use wasting my energy when I can wait for a chance to speak with Enzo. I glance around the cabin of the private jet. It’s not as spacious as Gio’s, but still luxurious with its plush leather seating and mini bar.

Enzo’s huddled in the far end of the cabin with a few of Lovato’s other men. As if sensing my gaze on him, he looks up at me. In the two years since I’ve met Enzo, I’ve never seen him in tailored clothes let alone any attire considered professional. But standing with Lovato’s men, Enzo blends in, wearing a button-down shirt and dress pants when normally he wore sagging jeans and giant ball jerseys. Even his hair has changed. It’s tapered and short on the sides.

Another version of me would’ve been attracted. A past me—the one whose stomach still fluttered when she saw Enzo’s square face and dark eyes. Seeing him now, even dressed up, does nothing for me. If anything, my chest tightens with dread as he walks over. I can already tell by his expression, his body language that he isn’t on my side.

He waits ’til Lovato is talking with one of his other guys before he addresses me.

“You’ve got yourself in deep shit now, Fal,” he lectures.

I swear under my breath. “Is that what you have to say to me after kidnapping me?!”

“Your boyfriend kidnapped you, didn’t he?”

“Ex-boyfriend, and it wasn’t like that. But that’s beside the point! Enzo…what are you doing? How could you?” My voice breaks off, tears coming fast.

“Don’t turn on the waterworks. That shit doesn’t work on me anymore.”

“You’re going to let him kill me?”
