Enzo’s eyes darken and he snaps forward, grabbing hold of my chin. “Don’t expect sympathy now. It only took you a couple months to move onto selling your pussy to the highest bidder. You disgust me, Fal.”

“I was doing what I had to do after you left me withyourmess! Do you think they stopped coming by to collect after you got arrested? You put me in the situation I was in to even think about doing it!”

“Don’t bullshit me. It’s always been who you are.” He eyes me like my presence revolts him to his core. “But I still tried to help you out. I told you to stop fucking around, didn’t I? I warned you that night of the shooting. Youchoseto be a dumb bitch and chase after him. You think you would be in deep now if you didn’t let him dick you down deep before? Theonlyreason Lovato’s snatched you is ’cause you’re a bargaining chip!”

The heaviness in my chest increases. It feels like an anchor is pressing down on me, making me sound like I’m choking when I try to speak. “I would’ve never betrayed you, Enzo. I can’t believe you’re doing this to me.”

“I’m no longer just a street guy,” he brags, letting go of my chin. He stands up straighter and tugs on the collar of his shirt. “They’re inducting me in as a solider. A real part of the crew.”

I can’t stomach looking at him anymore. I turn my head, the disgust too overwhelming. As I sit here tearing up, pleading for my life, Enzo is bragging about being inducted into the fucking Lovato crime family. It’s such a cruel joke, I can’t help wondering if there’s any possibility I’m dreaming.

I’m screwed. I’mdead.

Lovato will kill me to get a rise out of Gio. Nothing I say or do will change the fact that I’m collateral damage as these men war with each other. After years of hoping, dreaming of a stable life for myself, I’ll never get the chance at such happiness. It’s already over.

Enzo’s still eying me, a bitter glint that lights up his dark brown eyes. “Your only hope, Fal, is your boyfriend shows up and takes the offer.”

“Show up where? What offer?”

He sighs as if my questions are an inconvenience. “We’re headed back to Vegas. This ends tonight. Either Sorrentino shows up unarmed and alone to La Festa, or you’re getting a bullet in the brain.”

“What will Lovato do to him if he does show up?”

“It’s a surrender, a white flag. The turf war would be over, because it’d be a bullet inhisbrain.”

I scoff, a pang of satisfaction hitting me as I taunt him. “You think the Sorrentino family won’t retaliate? You kill Gio, you’re all dead. His father—”

“Is a breath away from dying. Face it, Fal. You picked the losing side.” Enzo moves to walk away, but then stops. “Oh, and don’t even bother thinking your boyfriend will show up for you. You abandoned him, remember? Giovanni Sorrentino isn’t going to risk his empire for your life.” He comes in close, his lips next to my ear. “You mean nothing to him. And to me.”

The brutal words sting, but I don’t show any emotion. I sit still, forcing my face neutral, and let Enzo stroll off with a cackle. On the inside, I’m a mess. The weight pressing down on my chest has only increased, tight and heavy. My throat burns every time I swallow and the tears keep pressing against my eyeballs for release.

I shudder out an unsteady sigh and glance out the dark porthole window. Never in a million years did I think my life would end like this.
