PLAYLIST: ? AND ALL THAT COULD HAVE BEEN - NINE INCH NAILS ?

Five years earlier…

“Mr. Sorrentino,Doctor Chambers would like a word,” says the emergency room nurse. A team of other nurses and doctors rush past her, swarming into the hospital room.

“What’s wrong with my wife?! You said you had stopped the bleeding! Why are all these nurses running in here? Why is my wife crying out in so much pain? FIX IT!”

I don’t give a fuck that I scream in her face. I’ve never felt more powerless, forced to stand by like a dumb fuck while Falynn cries out and blood stains her hospital gown. Yet I can do nothing to help her. We’re at the mercy of these dipshits and their ability to do their jobs properly.

Doctor Chambers appears among the chaos and interjects himself before I can bring the nurse to tears.

“Mr. Sorrentino, your wife is going into labor. We initially believed the bleeding was stopped, but I’m afraid the situation has grown much more serious. The placenta has attached itself to the lower parts of her uterus. It’s caused the placental tissue to cover her cervix and her to hemorrhage. We’re going to have to perform an emergency C-section,” he explains grimly.

“Then what the fuck are you doing standing here talking to me? Get started on it! Make it better!” I scream. Sweat beads on my forehead and rolls down my neck and back like I’ve been in beast mode at the gym. Instead, I’m more terrified than I’ve ever been in my life. A Mafia King drenched in sweat as his wife’s and baby’s lives are on the line. Doctor Chambers and his team were supposed to be some of the best in the country. How could they let this happen?!

My glare must turn murderous, because the man takes half a step back, his bushy, white eyebrows drawn together. He’s well aware of who I am and what I can do to him if he fails.

“Mr. Sorrentino, I assure you we will provide the best medical care humanly possible,” he says. “But I have to be realistic. I wanted to pull you aside for a word, because there is a chance we may not be able to save both.”

More sweat soaks me, my pulse racing out of control. “What do you mean, you won’t be able to save them both?!”

“It’s possible a choice may have to be made. Normally, mommy’s life comes first, but considering your, erm, positionI thought it best to defer to you—”

“My wife. You save my wife! Understand?”

“Yes, s-sir… I…I mean, Mr. Sorrentino.”

But because I’m still not convinced he understands how dire this situation is, I snatch hold of the front of his scrubs and drag him toward me, our faces practically touching. “Fucking save her,” I growl. “If you like being a living, breathing member of this world, you will save her, orelse. NOW!”

Doctor Chambers scampers off the second I let him go. He rushes toward the center of the room where the team of nurses work on a crying, bloody Falynn.

I stand off to the side for a second to recollect myself, though it’s impossible. I’m a jittery fucking mess. My nerves are shot and my heart punches at my chest. This must be what it was like for Giancarlo when he was high off cocaine. My body buzzes with sudden adrenaline, though it’s all useless energy. I can’t fix this with my brute strength. I can’t fix this with all the money and power in the world.

Falynn’s and our little one’s fates are out of my hands.

I slide my fingers through my damp, messy hair and husk out a rough breath.

Falynn needs me.

I have to do the only thing I’m able to do in a situation like this—be by her side every moment. Calm and soothe her as much as I can. I push my way through, joining her side.

The doctors and nurses have set up a surgical drape between her chest and the lower half of her body, blocking off what’s going on. A nurse on Falynn’s other side administers anesthesia for the emergency operation.

I curl Falynn’s hand within my own and tell her everything’s going to be okay. The anesthesia’s already kicking in. She glances up at me with a dreamy expression, tears still wet on her cheeks, though there’s recognition in her gaze.

“I love you, Honey,” I whisper, kissing her brow. “No matter what happens, I love you.”

The next week passes in a blur. Falynn must stay in the hospital for several days. She’s never alone—I’m there almost every moment, day and night. The only time I leave her side is to handle urgent business.

The fuckers who are responsible for this will suffer. I will see to it myself.

Antonio Lovato had my pregnant wife gunned down outside her doctor’s office like a fucking deranged savage. I will hurt him and every member of his family ten times worse. Any decorum is out the window.

There are no more rules. No more limits. Anything goes.

The hunt begins. I order my men to track down every member of his family, both by blood relation or “made” that way. We decimate them all, picking them off like target practice. Such bold actions are bound to attract the attention of other families, but it doesn’t matter what any of them think, or who they align with.
